Lore

The Aetheravians are a rare and breathtakingly beautiful people descended from ancient elemental spirits of the sky. Said to have been born from storms, solar winds, and volcanic ash, their souls are tied to the skies and the forces of nature that shape the world. Each Aetheravian is gifted with a connection to a specific element—fire, water, air, earth, light, or shadow—which shapes both their magic and their transformative bird form.

Legends speak of the First Flock, a conclave of elemental titans who wove the winds into feathers and breathed life into the skies. Their descendants walk the world in humanoid form but take flight as majestic elemental birds when called to action—symbols of hope, destruction, or rebirth.

They often live in hidden sky sanctuaries, high mountain temples, or islands floating in the elemental planes, guarding ancient wisdom and maintaining balance between elemental forces.

Physical Description

In their humanoid form, Aetheravians are tall, slender, and otherworldly—often compared to elves, but with even more refined features. Their skin carries a soft luminescence or shimmer that hints at their elemental origin, ranging from warm golden glows to moonlit shimmer, or shadowy iridescence. Their eyes often appear gemlike or glowing faintly with their ancestral element.

Their hair flows like silk in elemental hues—crimson like fire, silver-blue like water, stormy gray, or radiant white. Some bear feathery accents on their brows, forearms, or collarbones. In rare cases, vestigial wings or glowing markings appear, especially in powerful bloodlines.

In their bird form, they become large, majestic avians aligned with their elemental bloodline—a phoenix for fire, a stormbird for air, and so on—each glowing or resonating with raw elemental energy. Their feathers are often used as symbols in ancient prophecies or as rare components in magic.

Naming Conventions

Aetheravian names are lyrical and often inspired by wind, stars, song, or sky. Many have double meanings or elemental syllables. Examples include:

  • Feminine Names: Serenya, Kaelis, Araleen, Lysara, Nyomi

  • Masculine Names: Theron, Caelith, Aerion, Varyn, Solen

  • Neutral Names: Ishai, Elure, Nyxen, Azari, Velen

Family names often refer to flight, storms, or celestial bodies: Skyborn, Windshard, Dawnfeather, Nightwing, Emberveil.

Alignment

Aetheravians tend toward neutral or good alignments, drawn to balance, freedom, and awe-inspiring ideals.
However, some—especially those of shadow or fire ancestry—may lean toward chaotic or self-serving alignments, embracing passion, ambition, or vengeance.

Common Classes

Aetheravians excel in classes that reflect their mysticism, grace, and elemental power:

  • Sorcerer (especially Storm Sorcery, Phoenix Sorcery, or Shadow Magic)

  • Druid (often Circle of the Moon or Circle of the Stars)

  • Cleric (Tempest, Light, or Twilight Domains)

  • Monk (Way of the Four Elements or Way of the Ascendant Dragon)

  • Ranger (Horizon Walker or Drakewarden)

  • Bard (College of Glamour or Eloquence)

  • Paladin (Ancients or Redemption)

Some choose to train as wizards, rogues, or warlocks, though these are less common.

Avian Transformation

As a bonus action, you can transform into your Elemental Bird Form, which resembles a majestic, oversized bird (like a phoenix, thunderbird, frost falcon, etc.), themed to your elemental ancestry.

You can use this feature once per long rest. You remain in this form for 1 minute, until you are incapacitated, or you choose to end it (no action required).

In this form, you gain the following benefits:

  • Your movement speed becomes a flying speed of 60 feet.

  • You gain resistance to the damage type associated with your elemental ancestry.

  • Once per turn when you hit with an attack or damaging spell, you deal extra damage of your element equal to your proficiency bonus.

Aether Pulse

Prerequisite: Level 5

Once per long rest while in your bird form, you can unleash a burst of elemental energy in a 15-foot cone. Creatures in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your choice of INT, WIS, or CHA mod), taking 3d8 damage of your elemental type on a failed save, or half as much on a success.

Elemental Ancestry (Choose One)

At character creation, choose your elemental ancestry:

Ancestry Bird Form Damage Type Aesthetic
Fire Phoenix Fire Glowing feathers, embers trail your wings
Air Stormbird Lightning Crackling wings, thunder echoes
Water Tidal Albatross Cold Mist trails, ocean-hued plumage
Earth Obsidian Raven Force Crystal feathers, ground trembles when wings beat
Light Solar Crane Radiant Halo-like crown, beams of light flash with movement
Shadow Night Harrier Necrotic Shadowy silhouette, feathers absorb light

Aetheravian Traits

Aetheravians are graceful humanoids touched by elemental winds, born with the power to take the form of majestic, elemental birds. Their presence is radiant and otherworldly, and their bond to the skies is etched into their very soul. When danger calls, they unleash the essence of their ancestry in a dazzling avian transformation that leaves allies in awe—and enemies in ash.

Elemental Soulbound

Aetheravians are bound by elemental heritage, each one linked to a primordial force—flame, storm, tide, stone, light, or shadow. This connection grants not only resistance and power, but also the rare and awe-inspiring ability to assume the form of a stunning elemental bird. Whether as a phoenix wreathed in fire or a harrier cloaked in shadow, your transformation embodies your ancestral essence. This power marks you as both a guardian of balance and a living echo of the Elemental Skies.
