Homebrew Chimeran Species Details

At first glance, they are a contradiction made flesh — either ashen white hair cascading over obsidian-black skin, or a halo of jet-dark hair framing skin as pale as new snow. There is nothing subtle about their presence; every line and contrast speaks of something not quite human, something crafted rather than born.  Stillness in their breath. A silence between heartbeats. But it's the eyes that unsettle the most: vertical-slit pupils like a serpent’s, set in irises of glowing green, smoldering red, or abyssal blue. They don’t blink often. They don’t need to.

This human is not what they appear to be — in fact, they are rarely the same twice.

Gifted or cursed with the power of shifting, they can flawlessly mimic the form of any humanoid they've seen, slipping through identities like a snake through grass. Yet beyond these borrowed skins, they hold one form uniquely their own — a face they crafted from instinct and imagination, a mirror of who they wish to be rather than who they are.

Some say they are the result of arcane tampering, or a forgotten bloodline awakened. Others whisper of a secret cabal that breeds agents born to blend. Whatever the truth, this shape-shifter walks between masks, always watching, always adapting — a mystery even to themselves

Back story

Long ago, in the shadowed jungles where the Yuan-ti empires slithered and schemed, a forbidden ambition took root. The high priests of the Anaconda Clan, obsessed with attaining true perfection, sought not just to master magic or manipulate bloodlines, but to become the gods they worshipped—shapeshifters of flesh and will, limitless and immortal.

To achieve this, they began with humans, abducted from nearby villages. Alchemical toxins, serpent blood infusions, and eldritch rituals reshaped the test subjects into warped mockeries—flesh that bent, faces that shifted, voices that could imitate but not belong. Most died screaming. The rest were discarded, feral and mindless.

But the priests craved better. Rival Yuan-ti bloodlines were next—cobra, python, viper—each subjected to the same horrors. Still, the results were unstable. Promising, yes—but unstable. Eventually, in their arrogance and desperation, the Anaconda Clan turned on their own. They experimented on their own eggs, bathing unborn spawn in vats of mutagenic fluid and whispered magic.

And from those eggs, something else hatched.

The Chimeran.

They were not what the Yuan-ti had hoped. They could shift their appearance, yes—but not into perfection. Into chaos. Their minds were too sharp, too angry, too independent. They saw through lies. They refused obedience. Worse, they could disappear among other races—change faces, mimic voices, vanish in plain sight. The first generation turned on their creators, tearing throats and melting through stone halls in a shapeshifting riot of vengeance.

The survivors were caged, dissected, studied. But the Yuan-ti never again created anything like them. The project was abandoned, declared cursed and impure.

Years passed. The Chimerans, few and fractured, were bred or cloned in secret for study. But they never forgot. When the time came—led by an elder shapeshifter known only as Kish—they escaped. A dozen cells in unison across the jungles and laboratories broke free, burning everything in their path.

Now, the Chimerans roam the world, scattered and hunted. Most live in hiding, shifting form to survive. Others embrace the shadows, turning to crime, espionage, or revolution. A rare few seek to build something new—an identity free of the serpent’s shadow.

But every Chimeran knows this truth:

“We were made in chains. We walk free. But we are not finished.”

Chimeran possess an uncanny ability to manipulate their appearance, allowing them to blend in, deceive, or simply redefine themselves. Though human in origin, something deep within them has awakened—granting powers both physical and supernatural. Each Chimeran carries one true form of their own creation, but can wear the faces of others with ease. Their gifts make them ideal infiltrators, survivors, and shapeshifting enigmas. The following traits reflect the unique abilities and nature of the Chimeran race.

Shift

(Shift (Racial Trait) You possess the innate ability to alter your appearance at will. As an action, you can transform your physical form to perfectly mimic any Medium or Small humanoid you have seen, matching their voice, mannerisms, and appearance. This transformation is purely cosmetic and does not grant any of the target’s abilities, stats, or knowledge. You retain this form until you choose to revert back (no action required) or use this trait again. Additionally, you may create and store one custom form—a unique humanoid appearance of your own invention—which you can shift into even without having seen it in the world.

Self Shadow

Self-Shadow Your magic leaves behind a perfect facsimile—an echo of your presence, moving on a loop. Trait: You can cast the Programmed Illusion spell once per long rest, but only to create a visual and auditory illusion of yourself. The illusion must depict you in your current or most recent form, performing a short 6-second action or routine (e.g., walking down a hallway, standing and talking, fighting, pacing, sitting and reading). It occupies a space within 30 feet and lasts up to 10 minutes or until triggered. The illusion activates under a simple condition (e.g., “when someone enters the room,” “after I leave,” “at dawn”), then plays the preprogrammed action once. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for this spell, and it requires no material components when cast this way.

Phantom Sheding

Phantom Shedding At the height of your mastery, you can peel away your presence like a cloak, leaving behind a haunting echo. Trait (10th Level+): Once per long rest, you can cast a special version of Mislead as an action, requiring no components. This illusion must take the form of yourself, exactly as you appeared at the time of casting. The illusion lasts for up to 1 minute, is fully mobile, and can move up to double your walking speed per turn (but cannot speak or attack). You become invisible for the duration, as is normal for Mislead. The illusion mimics your body language and gestures exactly, but can move in a different direction from you. You can switch your awareness between yourself and the illusion as part of your movement on your turn (as with Mislead). Intelligence (Investigation) check to see through the illusion: DC = 8 + your Charisma modifier + your proficiency bonus.

Minor Miracles

Minor Miracles: Your connection to mutable magic lets you twist the world in small, curious ways. Trait: You can cast the Prestidigitation cantrip a number of times per long rest equal to your level times Charisma modifier (minimum 1). When you cast it this way, it requires no components. At 7th level, you can maintain up to three Prestidigitation effects at once, rather than the usual limit of one.

Ideals

Chimerans carry deep, instinctive hatred for anything tied to the Anaconda Clan. This includes:

  • Yuan-ti bearing the Anaconda bloodline or symbols

  • Priests or cultists who revere the Yuan-ti serpents

  • Alchemists, warlocks, or scholars who continue the line of "improvement through suffering"

  • Laboratories or temples built with Anaconda influence

  • Passion for Freedom
Born in cages, freedom is sacred. No Chimeran tolerates slavery, forced conformity, or imprisonment. Many become rebels, wanderers, or rogues not out of necessity—but out of ideology.

Justice Ideals

"I won’t stop until the cages are empty and the prisons burn."
