Homebrew Arcane-touched kobold (updated version) Species Details

Origins:
Arcane-Touched Kobolds are not hatched from the usual clutch of eggs, but forged through magical experimentation. In hidden laboratories, ancient ritual circles, or war-mages’ vaults, they are shaped by alchemical fumes, infused with volatile reagents, and rewritten by spells that twist their draconic blood into something new. Their scales shimmer faintly as if threads of magic run just beneath their skin, and rune-like shapes glow within their eyes.

The first Arcane-Touched Kobolds were created as experiments, servants, and living weapons. Some survived their makers’ intentions and escaped into the wider world, carrying with them both the gifts and dangers of their transformation.

Society:
Among unaltered kobold tribes, Arcane-Touched Kobolds are often viewed with suspicion or fear. Some tribes drive them away, calling them cursed; others revere them as blessed by the gods or chosen emissaries of dragonkind. In rare cases, entire warrens form from these magically altered kin, their tunnels glowing with soft runelight.

Arcane-Touched Kobolds tend to be more curious than fearful, driven to understand the strange energy within them. They make skilled mages, alchemists, and scouts, though their magical instability sometimes draws unwanted attention.

Beliefs:
Arcane-Touched Kobolds often wrestle with questions about their own existence — whether they are truly “born” or merely “made.” Some embrace their origins, believing they were created for a great purpose. Others reject any notion of destiny, seeking to define themselves by their own actions.

Many believe their volatile magic is a living part of them, a second soul or “spark spirit” that whispers guidance — or temptation. This belief sometimes shapes their personal rituals, from daily meditations to dangerous magical experiments.

Arcane Mutation Table (Roleplay Flavor)

When creating an Arcane-Touched Kobold, roll a d8 (or choose) to determine the strange magical side-effect of your creation. These quirks have no mechanical impact but may influence how others perceive you.

Arcane mutations are not constant — they can appear randomly, flare up during strong emotions, or manifest when you use magic. The DM may trigger them at will to emphasize your unstable magical nature, or you may choose to roleplay them whenever you feel it fits the moment.

d8 Arcane Mutation
1 Your veins glow faintly in the dark, pulsing brighter when you cast a spell or feel fear.
2 Sparks or motes of colored light drift from your scales when startled or excited.
3 Your shadow sometimes moves slightly out of sync with you, especially when you lie or are angry.
4 When you speak, faint arcane whispers echo a half-second later, growing louder when you’re emotional.
5 Your eyes momentarily flash with runes when you feel strong emotions or sense danger.
6 The air around you smells faintly of ozone or hot metal when you’re agitated or concentrating.
7 Small illusory glyphs appear around your hands when you gesture, especially when stressed.
8 Plants and small objects subtly lean toward you when you are deep in thought or channeling magic
