Homebrew Dhampir Species Details

Origins and Birth
The birth of a dhampir is a rare and tragic event, one that begins with a pregnant woman being turned into a vampire. The transformation affects both the mother and the child she carries, resulting in a living-undead hybrid. This unique origin leaves dhampir with a deep connection to both the world of the living and the realms of the dead, but also with inherent struggles. The transformation is so taxing on the mother that few survive the pregnancy, and even fewer still retain the capacity or desire to raise their dhampir child. Instead, many dhampirs are left to fend for themselves from the moment of their birth, often abandoned or orphaned.

Due to their origin, dhampirs are seen as unnatural beings—an affront to both mortal and undead societies. The intense trauma of their birth and the societal rejection they face from both sides creates an emotional and psychological burden that few escape unscathed. From the moment they are born, they live in the shadows of two worlds but fully belong to neither.

Prejudice and Persecution
Despite their physical beauty and supernatural allure, dhampirs face an unrelenting lifetime of prejudice and suspicion. Their vampiric nature, even in childhood, is a source of fear and fascination among mortals. The supernatural powers they inherit, such as increased strength, speed, darkvision, and an unsettling ability to drain life with a bite, mark them as threats in the eyes of those around them. In addition to their vampiric abilities, dhampirs are also sensitive to sunlight, making them stand out even more among normal mortals.

Reactions from the world around them range from awe to terror, but most often, fear manifests in hatred. Many dhampirs are immediately perceived as evil, and this perception leads to their alienation, exclusion, and often violent rejection by the very communities they attempt to join. Some mortals see the dhampir as a cursed being, an omen of death, or a living reminder of the undead horrors that plague the world. The persecution they face drives many to become hardened and solitary, either embracing their darker nature or retreating from society altogether.

A Cursed Masquerade
Dhampirs do not have their own societies, nor do they have a place in the structured communities of either humans or vampires. They are born out of a liminal existence that renders them both too human to be accepted by the undead and too tainted by death to be embraced by the living. As a result, dhampirs adapt to the societies they find themselves in, often as orphans or outcasts. Whether raised in a mortal village or wandering the ruins of their vampire parent's lair, they must constantly mask their true nature to survive.

While it is possible for dhampirs to blend into mortal society for short periods, their supernatural traits eventually give them away. Their sensitivity to daylight, unnatural beauty, or uncanny abilities inevitably draw suspicion, and it is only a matter of time before they are revealed. Once outed, dhampirs often face rejection from the very community they hoped to belong to, turning them into outcasts and exiles.

In the rare cases where a dhampir is taken in by a vampire lord or other undead parent, they often find themselves relegated to the fringes of vampire society. Treated as little more than a half-breed, they may be forced to serve the will of their undead progenitor without ever fully gaining the power or prestige of a true vampire. This existence of limbo—caught between the living and the dead, the accepted and the outcast—drives many dhampirs to seek their own paths, carving out a future where they can control their destiny rather than be bound by the curse of their birth.

Survival and Self-Discovery
Ultimately, a dhampir’s life is one of struggle and self-discovery. They must come to terms with their dual nature—half mortal, half undead—and learn to navigate a world that offers little understanding or acceptance. Survival, both physically and emotionally, depends on their ability to control their vampiric impulses and manage the hunger that defines their existence. Some dhampirs embrace their powers and become fierce adventurers, using their unnatural strength to seek vengeance or redemption. Others become solitary hunters, choosing the life of an outcast in order to distance themselves from the threat they pose to others.

In a world that has no place for them, dhampirs are forced to build their own identities, learning to master their strengths while keeping their darkest desires in check. It is this journey, more than any external challenge, that shapes a dhampir into the person they are meant to be.

Dhampir Traits

As a dhampir, you inherit the best—and the worst—of both your mortal and undead heritage. This unique lineage grants you a blend of resilience and power, alongside a constant struggle to control your darker nature. Your connection to the undead affords you extraordinary abilities, but also a perpetual craving for life force that can never be fully quenched. This tension between life and death shapes your every action, defining you as a being apart from both the living and the undead.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in darkness as shades of gray.

Predator of The Night

As a creature born of the undead and the living, your instincts are shaped by the hunt. You gain proficiency in Perception, sharpening your senses to detect even the faintest disturbances in your surroundings. Additionally, you have advantage on Survival checks made to track a creature, allowing you to follow trails or discern the presence of others with unnerving accuracy. Whether stalking through dense forests, urban streets, or across desolate lands, you are always one step ahead of your prey, driven by an ancient, unyielding instinct to hunt.

Deathless Nature

You no longer require air, making you immune to drowning or suffocation. Your aging slows to one year for every seven, and you gain resistance to poison damage. Instead of a full long rest, you can remain still and aware for just five hours to gain the benefits of rest.

Vampiric Bite

You can use your bite as a natural weapon to deal 1d6 piercing damage to a creature within 5 feet of you. Whenever you deal damage with your bite, you heal for half the damage dealt (rounded down). You can use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency modifier per long rest.

Need to Feed

You must feed once every 1d4 long rests to avoid the negative effects of hunger. To feed, you can spend 5 minutes consuming blood from an incapacitated, restrained, paralyzed, or unconscious creature. The creature takes no damage unless it resists, but it suffers 1 level of exhaustion. Alternatively, you can use your Vampiric Bite to bite another creature and heal, which delays your need to feed again for 1d4 long rests.

Spider Climb

You have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed, allowing you to scale walls and other surfaces with ease.
