Homebrew Vulkrian Goblin Species Details

Large eyes gleaming in the dark, a lone traveler fears that they are not alone. Step by step, they hear the softest of steps within the woods, the swishing of speed, grunts and giggles. They stop to look, fear in their throat as one pair, two, four, eight, twelve pairs of eyes flicker open in their direction. Yet danger never comes. Not even as the sounds of ferocious beasts snarling and yelping echo from within the woods does the danger reach them. The weary traveler forces themselves to keep going, only to realize upon arrival that they’ve lost a trinket or three in the process. They consider it fair payment for safe passage.

Bestial Appearance.

The Vulkrian goblins have a vaguely bestial appearance with their sharp teeth, large eyes, mouse-like tails and elongated, clawed-claw feet. Their pupils slit and open like those of a cat, their large ears flexible and highly expressive. Vulkrian goblins come in a variety of muted and natural colors, but most common is a dusty brown or stone gray, while the eyes can have any brightness and color. Their clothing is made to blend into their surroundings, a camouflage they more often than not ruin by compulsively adding their various trinkets and treasures onto their garments. At first glance they might look like feral people, causing those who don't know anything about their society and culture to fear them.

Curious Minds.

These goblins have a very difficult time ignoring an urge or impulse. Coupled with incredibly curious and exploratory minds, Vulkrian goblins often end up causing trouble by picking things apart to try and figure out how they work, or simply stealing whatever catches their eye. In order to avoid being bothered by the antics of goblins, clever merchants adorn their carts with useless but interesting looking trinkets on strings. This is usually enough to satisfy these sticky-fingered beings.

Benevolent Nuisances

In a strange irony, it is considered good luck to have a goblin steal a trinket, as irritating as it might be at times. Goblins are very clever and have excellent memories, taking note of those who don't lash out against them for their antics and of those who show them generosity. Living for around three centuries, they can keep tabs on several generations of a family they've grown fond of. If they live near a friendly and generous village, the goblins will keep the roads safe, return any children lost or hurt in the woods and give warnings of imminent threats; mostly without being spotted. There are even accounts of people finding valuables on their persons after having fallen on hard times, gifts from goblins who wish to keep their friendly neighbors in good health and happiness.

However, their keen minds also keep grudges. If they're lashed out against, they will take note of those who do them harm. If the goblins are particularly fond of their territory and thus aren't willing to flee, they will try to bargain with the people to keep themselves safe. If that is also met with violence, they will become increasingly hostile towards those who hurt them, not hesitating to go for the kill. They do however almost never hurt anyone who's not directly gone against them. Some go the extra mile to ensure the goblins know they're amicable by hanging gifts of trinkets and oddities on their windows and doors. It is not necessary as the goblins keep good track of these things themselves, but they appreciate the gesture.

"A lone man can take on a lone goblin in a fight.

But there is no such thing as a lone goblin."
