Homebrew Daywalker Species Details

Origins

Daywalkers are a rare and cursed bloodline of vampires, descended from those who were touched by divine pity rather than divine wrath. When the gods—or in some tales, a single Sun Goddess—saw the torment of certain vampires seeking redemption, they intervened. Instead of purging their undead nature, they reshaped it, binding them to both shadow and sunlight.

Where most vampires are predators lurking in darkness, Daywalkers walk the fragile line between monster and savior. They are undead still, cursed with bloodlust and forbidden from the peace of true mortality, yet they are spared the searing pain of the sun.

Physical Traits

Appearance: Daywalkers retain the pale, otherworldly beauty of vampires, but their eyes glow faintly with a supernatural light—sometimes gold, silver, or even icy blue. Their presence feels both alluring and unsettling, a constant reminder of their duality.

Sunlight Tolerance: Unlike their cursed kin, Daywalkers can stand beneath the sun without harm, though many describe the warmth as “hollow” or muted compared to mortals.

Aura of Shadows: Even in daylight, shadows seem to cling to their form, stretching unnaturally as if alive.

Abilities

Radiant Resistance: The Sun’s blessing hardens them against radiant power that would normally scorch undead flesh.

Shadow Walker: Their nature remains tied to darkness; they can slip through shadows, vanishing and reappearing short distances away.

Blood Frenzy: Though blessed, the curse still burns within them. If starved or gravely injured, their restraint shatters and they fall into a violent frenzy, lashing out at all nearby until sated or subdued.

Culture & Lore

Between Worlds: Daywalkers exist in constant tension. Mortals rarely trust them, fearing their hunger, while other vampires view them as abominations—betrayers of the night.

Lonely Wanderers: Few Daywalkers find belonging. Many become hunters of their own kind, seeking to protect mortals from the terrors they themselves embody.

Divine Burden: Though blessed, they remain undead. Their souls are trapped in eternal limbo:

never fully mortal, never fully damned.

Blood Frenzy

When you are below 25% of your maximum hit points or have not fed on blood for an extended period (DM’s discretion), you must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 10 + your level) or enter a frenzy.

While in Blood Frenzy:

You deal double damage with melee weapon attacks.

You cannot distinguish friend from foe and must attack the nearest living creature on your turn.

The frenzy lasts until you are healed to more than half your maximum hit points or you use your Blood Drain trait to feed.

When the frenzy ends, you gain 1 level of exhaustion.
