Homebrew Gyrosphere Warforged Species Details
"The war will not wait for men to crawl with bandages and prayers. So I built a healer that does not tire, does not bleed, does not stop. Let the soldiers fall — and let my gyrospheres spin through the mud to raise them again. They are mercy made metal… though mercy has a price."
— Artificer Daelrik Veynor, Architect of the Gyrosphere Warforged
Gyrosphere Warforged are quirky, fast, and often theatrical in personality. Their spinning locomotion makes them visually distinct from their heavier kin, and their original purpose as medics often carries through into their chosen lives. Many remain haunted by old wars and the comrades they couldn’t save, leading to bittersweet humor or odd habits of care (“Here, drink water. No? Then let me throw it at you.”).
Those who survive into the modern age are often seen as rare relics, some worshipped as divine constructs, others mistaken for toys or statues until they spark to life.
Appearance of the Gyrosphere Warforged
Unlike traditional warforged, whose forms often blend wood, stone, and metal, the Gyroball subtype is built almost entirely from refined alloys and reinforced plating. Their creators knew that medics had to endure the same punishment as frontline soldiers — rushing into arrowfire, spellfire, and collapsing trenches to drag the fallen out alive.
Core Frame
-
Compact, no taller than a dwarf, with a broad chest piece designed to open up and act as storage.
-
Designed to be lighter than standard warforged, giving them a surprisingly nimble and aerodynamic silhouette.
Gyroscopic Movement Core
-
Instead of feet or legs, they balance atop a magical gyrosphere — a perfectly smooth, metallic orb humming with faint arcane sigils.
-
The sphere spins in any direction, allowing them to roll swiftly across open ground. Trails of faint blue-white sparks sometimes flicker beneath them as the magic stabilizers hum.
-
Their rolling design makes them strangely graceful in motion, but slightly awkward when still, like a toy soldier balancing on tiptoe. The Gyrosphere can jump with the help of its spring-like internals.
Head & Face
-
Orb-like head with softly glowing singular central ocular lens (often colored blues, whites, or golds for “medic units”). This is used as a spotlight while in darkened area's to locate those injured.
-
No carved “mouth,” but many have a speaker-like grille or resonator that projects their voice — sometimes glitching into static when damaged.
-
Some Gyroballs develop etched engravings, scratches, or battlefield slogans left by their former units.
Arms & Tools
-
Saw-arm attachment: A retractable rotary blade once meant for amputation and battlefield surgery, though many now repurpose it for defense.
-
Flamethrower nozzle: Originally designed for cauterization, doubling grimly as a weapon when needed.
-
Stim injector port: Often built into their wrists or shoulders, these deliver alchemical or magical stimulants to allies.
Armor & Shielding
-
Heavier plating runs across the torso, chest, and shoulders, with reinforced edges where arrows and blades might strike.
-
A retractable shield is integrated into one arm, unfolding like a fan of steel when deployed.
-
This makes them appear almost “knightly,” though the smaller size and rolling movement undercuts the grandeur with an odd charm.
Personality in Appearance
-
While clinical and metallic in design, most Gyroballs eventually accumulate a “patched-up” look from years of survival:
-
mismatched plating, soot-stains, scorched edges, dents repaired with riveted plates.
-
Scratched names of fallen comrades or unit numbers carved into their armor.
-
Some decorate themselves with paints or cloth wraps, a way to distinguish themselves from looking like mass-produced machines.

Gyrosphere Warforged Traits
Your warforged character has the following traits. A few of the traits give you a choice; consider how your choice reflects the purpose for which your character was built.Ability Score Increase
Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score is increased by 1.
Age
A typical warforged is between two and thirty years old. The maximum warforged lifespan remains a mystery; so far, warforged have shown no signs of deterioration due to age. You are immune to magical aging effects.
Alignment
Most warforged take comfort in order and discipline, tending toward law and neutrality. But some have absorbed the morality, or lack thereof, of the beings with which they served.
Size
Your size is Small, Averaging around 4 ft in height.
Speed
Speed. Your base walking speed is 35 feet.
Gyroscopic Mobility. You have disadvantage on ability checks and saving throws made to resist being knocked prone while on difficult terrain.
Constructed Resilience
You were created to have remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits:
- You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
- You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
- You are immune to disease.
- You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Sentry’s Rest
When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.
Specialized Design
You gain one skill proficiency and one tool proficiency of your choice.
Shielding Frame
You have a retractable shield module built into your arm. As a bonus action, you can extend or retract it. While extended, it functions as a normal shield (+2 AC). While the shield is active the Gyrosphere's movement speed is reduced to 25.
Surgical Tools
Built with emergency protocols in mind, you have integrated medical or mechanical attachments (such as saws, injectors, or cauterizers). You can use tinker's tools or any healer’s kit without needing to hold them.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
