Homebrew Boo Species Details

Boos are mischievous spirits of the Mushroom Kingdom, lingering long past mortal life. Unlike undead found elsewhere, Boos retain their personalities, humor, and intelligence. They gather in hidden communities—haunted mansions, abandoned ships, forgotten hotels, and misty graveyards—often led by eccentric nobles who style themselves Lords and Ladies.

Though they delight in spooking the living, most Boos mean no real harm. Shy yet playful, they vanish when looked upon and phase through walls to avoid conflict. Their loyalty to family and community is strong, though few Boos wholly trust their infamous ruler, King Boo, whose hunger for domination has drawn unwanted fear to their kind.

As a Boo, you have these special traits.

Ghostly Hover

You hover a few inches above the ground.

  • You can’t be knocked prone.

  • You leave no footprints or physical traces while hovering.

Invisibility

As a reaction when a creature makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw that targets only you, you temporarily become invisible to stop yourself from being discovered by the triggering creature.  Until the end of your next turn, you remain invisible and your steps make no sound, regardless of the surface you are moving across. Anything you are wearing or carrying is invisible as long as it is on your person. The effect ends early if you attack or cast a spell.

Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Ethereal Slip

You can move through creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain.

  • If you end your turn inside an object, you are shunted to the nearest unoccupied space and take 1d10 force damage per 5 feet moved.

  • You cannot move through solid ground or descend below it.

Spook

You are skilled at startling others.

  • You gain proficiency in the Intimidation skill.

  • When you roll a 1 on an Intimidation check, you can reroll the die, but must use the new result.

Shared Shroud

You can briefly extend your invisibility to others.

  • As an action, you can touch one willing creature within 5 feet. Until the end of your next turn, you and that creature remain invisible. Anything you are wearing or carrying is invisible as long as it is on your person. The spell ends early if you attack, use your speed, or cast a spell.
  • Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
