Homebrew Odonatan Species Details
Odonatan are a dragonfly like humanoid species native to more humid climates were small prey fauna is in abundance.
Due to their similarity to the common dragonfly, some sages have speculated that the Odonatans are a magically created species based off the insect. Normally existing in solitary domains, groups of Odonatans gather when prey is in abundance and to procreate.
Odonatan Traits
Odonatans have the following average traits:Ability Score Increase
Odonatans have a +2 to Dexterity, and +1 to Intelligence.
Age
Odonatans grow and mature quickly from a semi-sentient larval form, pupating into their adult form after 3-5 years. They are born with a complex genetic memory inherited from their parents, allowing them to be active almost immediately after emerging from the pupae and hardening their wings and exoskeleton. They typically live to around 40 years of age, if well fed and in environments with clean air.
Size
Adult Odonatans are 5-6 feet tall, and weight 50-70 pounds. They are medium sized, with hard chitinous bodies.
Speed
Odonatan walking speed is 20 feet, climbing speed is 5 feet, and flying speed is 50 feet and can hover. Odonantans can not fly while wearing medium or heavy armor, or while over encumbered by other means. Odonatan's have the spider-climb ability, and can climb and maneuver on any surface that isn't slippery or liquid.
Languages
Odonatans typically speak their own language, a clicking-screeching tonal sound system produced by their mandibles, and body plates rubbing and vibrating together. It is incomprehensible to most non-insectoid creatures that have not trained in understanding it. They also speak common, and typically one more language inherited from their parents.
Bite
As a bonus action, an Odonatan can attempt a Bite Attack against a target , which deals Piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, with a minimum of 1 damage. At level 6 this becomes 2d4 + your Strength modifier, at level 12 it becomes 3d4 + your Strength modifier, and at level 18 it becomes 4d4 + your Strength modifier. You can use this ability a number of times per a day equal to your Proficiency Bonus.
An Odonatan that is in a grapple, has advantage on the attack roll for their Bite Attack.
You can not use this Bite ability against Oozes.
Excellent Eyes
Odonatans have the same incredible visual acuity as the dragonfly. Granting them incredibly increased perception of their surroundings. They have advantage on all Wisdom (Perception) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks relying on sight, and can't be surprised while awake in bright, normal, or dim light conditions. Odonatan's Excellent Eyes trait does not function in darkness unless they have gained the Darkvision, Devil's Sight, or True Sight trait.
However due to the exceptional nature of the Odonatan's eye sight, close up exposure to intense sources of light, such as from a Lighting Bolt spell, Fireball, Daylight Spell being cast, or similar spell or effect within 15 feet has a chance to temporarily disorient an Odonatan. When exposed to a flash of intense light, an Odonatan must succeed at a Constitution saving throw of DC 16 minus their Constitution Modifier or be momentarily disoriented while they adjust to the lighting conditions. They have disadvantage on all attack rolls, and all sight based Wisdom (Perception) or Intelligence (Investigation) checks until the end of their next turn.
A blind Odonatan is unaffected by intense light sources.
Alienlike
Odonatans don't fit into most civilizations or societies, their insect like, almost alien, appearance and mannerism often makes others avoid or reject the Odonatans.
Odonatans have disadvantage on all Charisma (Persuasion) and Charisma (Performance) checks against most 'normal' humanoids. (The list is to long, but it would contain humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, gnomes, dragonfolk, most animal-based folk.) But have advantage on Charisma (Deception) and Charisma (Intimidation) checks against the same.
Additionally, due to their strange alienlike insectoid physiology, Odonatans receive only half healing from spells, abilities, or items - they regain hit points as normal while rolling Hit Dice for Short and Long Rests, or from abilities, spells, or magic items that specifically Regenerate instead of heal.
Multi-Armed
Odonatan's smaller and lighter frame limits them to smaller and lighter weaponry. While they are fast, and powerful - their raw strength is diluted between their multiple arms. In most cases, they are only able to wield Light weapons, being careful to control the momentum in order to avoid throwing themselves off balance. Odonatans with a Strength score of at least 15 can wield heavy weapons, but must do so by combining the strength of two arms (or more) to wield such weaponry. These arms function normally otherwise for interacting with objects or performing actions that do not require a Strength check.
