Homebrew Wood Woad Species Details

Wood Woads are living constructs of bark and vine, souls bound to eternal guardianship. Born of an ancient druidic ritual, their mortal hearts are sealed in sacred trees, and their wooden forms stalk the wild places of the world as protectors—or, sometimes, as wanderers searching for purpose beyond the groves. Though created to defend the forest, Wood Woads retain echoes of their former selves, blending mortal resolve with elemental endurance.

Wood Woad Traits

Creature Type: Plant
Size: Medium (about 4–7 feet tall) or Small (about 2–4 feet tall), chosen when you select this species
Speed: 30 feet

As a Wood Woad, you have these special traits.

Barkflesh

Your body is covered in hardened bark. While you aren’t wearing armor, your base AC is 17. You can wield a shield.

Photosynthetic Recovery

Once per long rest, while you are standing on natural ground in bright sunlight, you can use a bonus action to begin absorbing solar energy. For 1 minute, you regain hit points equal to your proficiency bonus at the start of each of your turns. This effect ends early if you are dealt fire damage or if you are no longer in direct sunlight and on natural ground.

Rooted Passage

As a bonus action, you can magically step into a living tree within 5 feet of you and emerge from another living tree of equal or greater size that you can see within 60 feet. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all uses when you finish a long rest.

Natural Fortitude

You have resistance to nonmagical bludgeoning damage. You are vulnerable to fire damage.

Heartless Nature

You don’t require food, drink, or air, and you cannot die from old age. However, your soul remains tied to the heart-tree where your mortal heart resides. The destruction of this heart-tree could have unforeseen consequences at the DM's discretion.
