Homebrew Axolotoly Species Details

The axolotoly are thought by some to be distant cousins of lizardfolk and grung. Despite their resemblance to those other amphibious folk, however, axolotoly are their own people and have lived in the waters of worlds of the Material Plane since the worlds’ creation. Gifted by the gods with physical defenses and the ability to breathe underwater and on land. Typically the axolotoly are found in isolationist colonies in deep bodies of water, only leaving to go on a coming of age pilgrimage to bind themself to the world's nature, typically becoming Rangers or Druids.

Axolotoly have colorful skin and exhibit a wide array of gill patterns. Their individual facial features are as varied as those of other salamanders, their appearances are usually determined by the waters they hail from.

Poisonous Film

A poisonous film coats your skin. When you are hit with a melee attack from within 5 ft. of you, you deal 1d6 + your proficiency bonus poison damage to the attacker. This automatically effects attackers making direct contact, if the attacker is making a weapon attack this effect only activate if they fail a DEX save, with a DC equal to your AC.

Feathery Gills

Nature’s Intuition

Thanks to your mystical connection to nature, you gain proficiency with two of the following skills of your choice: Animal Handling, Medicine, Nature, Perception, Stealth, or Survival.

Limited Regeneration

Thanks to your Urodelan genetics you are able to regenerate parts of your body lost through combat, etc. over time. This timescale varies depending on the mass/complexity of the body part being regenerated. Once regrown, the body part is indistinguishable from the original, unfortunately, the body part is effectively useless until fully reformed.

This regeneration can only occur as long as you have spent at least 1 hour in water each day, otherwise, the regeneration pauses until the next time you spend at 1 hour in water.

Example Time Scales:

  • Fingers/Toes - 2 to 3 Days
  • Hands/Feet - 2 Weeks
  • Half Limb - 1 month
  • Full Limb - 2 Months
  • Tail - 3 Weeks
