Homebrew Winter Wolf Species Details

The arctic-dwelling winter wolf is as large as a dire wolf but has snow-white fur and pale blue eyes. Frost Giants use these creatures as guards and hunting companions, putting the wolves’ deadly breath weapon to use against their foes. Winter wolves communicate with one another using growls and barks, but they speak Common and Giant as well, though they use it rarely.

Winter Wolf Traits

Winter wolves have the following traits:

Ability Score Increase

Your strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Age

Winter wolves live for decades, but not very many of them. The oldest Winter wolf was said to be 100 years old, but most only live to 50.

Alignment

Most Winter wolves tend towards evil alignments, thinking only of the good of themselves and their pack, and often believing anything smaller than themselves to be lesser.

Size

Winter wolves stand between 6 and 7 feet tall, their lupine bodies towering over many an adventurer. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 40 feet.

Beast

Your creature type is beast, rather than humanoid.

Bite

Your bite is a natural melee weapon. When you hit with it, your deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier. This increases to 2d6 damage at third level, 3d6 at seventh level, 4d6 at eleventh level, and 5d6 at nineteenth level. A creature hit by this attack must make a Strength saving throw or be knocked prone, where the DC is 10 + your Strength modifier.

Lupine Build

You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push or drag.

You can wield only a single melee weapon, and it is carried in your jaws.

In addition, any climb that requires hands and feet is especially difficult for you because of your paws. When you make such a climb, each foot of movement costs you 2 extra feet, instead of the normal 1 extra foot.

Breath Weapon

You can use your action to exhale a blast of icy cold. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a Dexterity saving throw. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 cold damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Damage Resistance

You have resistance to Cold damage.

Languages

You can speak and read Common, Giant, and Winter wolf, but writing is near impossible without thumbs.
