Homebrew Bat Ponies (Thestrals/Nocturnes) Species Details

 

Darkvision

• You can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light.

• You can distinguish colors in darkness, but only shades of gray.

• • Walking Speed: 30 ft.

  • Flying Speed: 30 ft. (requires space to spread wings; can’t fly in medium or heavy armor)

  • Echolocation

    • As a bonus action, you can activate echolocation for 1 minute. While active:

      • You gain blindsight 30 ft.

      • You cannot use this trait if you are deafened.

    • You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and regain all expended uses after a long rest.

    • Silent Guardian

      • You gain proficiency in Stealth.

      • In dim light or darkness, you can attempt to Hide even if only lightly obscured.

      • Fruitful Bond

        • Bat ponies prize fruit as tokens of affection and survival.

        • You have proficiency in Nature or Survival (your choice).

        • Additionally, during a short rest, you can share food with an ally: that ally regains an extra 1d4 HP if they spend a Hit Die.

        • Languages

          • You can speak, read, and write Common and Sylvan

          • Ability Score Increase

            • +2 Dexterity, +1 Wisdom
              (Agile fliers with keen senses and nocturnal intuition.)

Bat Ponies (Thestrals/Nocturnes) Traits

Traits & Abilities Like pegasi, they can fly, but their wings are leathery (like bats) and often associated with silent, agile movement. Sometimes depicted with better night vision than other ponies, fitting their nocturnal nature. Fanon often gives them echolocation or sharper senses. Many stories tie them to the moon or Princess Luna, as guardians of the night. Culture & Lore (Fanon) In official canon, their culture isn’t explored — they’re more of a visual gag/guard aesthetic. But in fanworks, bat ponies are often portrayed as: Nocturnal and living in caves, forests, or hidden mountain cities. Fiercely loyal to Luna (some headcanons say they’re her personal creation or blessing). Having a proud, sometimes secretive warrior culture. Enjoying fruit (especially mangos 🍊) — this started as a fandom meme but became a staple bat-pony trait.
