Homebrew Cephaloid Species Details

The cephaloids hail from the lost city of Cephalopolis, which was once a great and powerful human kingdom, known for worshipping the Lord of the Deep. Hundreds of years ago, however, the residents of Cephalopolis had lost their faith in their god, and had failed to deliver the tribute which they had promised in return for their safety and great fortune. It is believed that, as a result of this heresy, the lands of Cephalopolis were struck by a great and terrible tsunami, which crushed their city and rendered it rubble beneath the sea foam. Many Cephalopians were able to escape the catastrophe, but what befell them was something they'd never bargained for. The Cephalopian survivors were transformed into an entirely different species, never before seen in this world: the cephaloids we know today. Gelatinous skin, tentacles and tendrils for appendages, bodies that did not age yet could not reproduce, and a general physiology more akin to a sea creature than a human. To some it was a curse, to others a new beginning, but regardless, the change was entirely permanent and irreversible.

The population of cephaloids has declined over time, as while they do not age, they are not invulnerable, and a great deal have even been hunted down by pirate poachers, who believe their bodies can be used for medicine, or simply as trophies. Still, the surviving population of cephalopians are an especially hardy race, and the majority have surprisingly decided upon rekindling their faith with the Lord of the Deep, but perhaps this was the ultimate goal of their god: a race made in his image, entirely loyal unto him. This is not to say, however, that the surviving cephaloids are a race of hermit cultists who worship in the shadows, they are actually a free-spirited species, and they believe it is their duty to venture the world, bringing the image of their god and the power of the abyss wherever they go.

Cephaloid Traits

Cephaloids are gifted in occult magic, and in conjunction with their unique physiology and additional appendages, they are able to cast an additional eldritch blast with each use. Twice a day, cephaloids may use an ink charge: underwater, this will produce a 30m sphere of darkness, and on land, this can be used to blind a single target for one turn. When underwater, cephaloids gain devil's sight, and can respirate normally

Abyssal Devil's Sight

Underwater, gain devil's sight.

Tendril Blast

When casting eldritch blast, fire one additional bolt.

Dark Brine

Grants ability to use ink charges twice per long rest.
Upon using ink charge:
- On Land: Blind one enemy for one turn.
- Underwater: Create 30m sphere of darkness around caster.
