Homebrew Nyxarim Species Details
Nyxarim: Children of the Nightmare Veil Alright, so let’s talk about the Nyxarim—these freaky cosmic kids born out of pure nightmare fuel and, like, the stuff that keeps you up at 3am. They’re not stuck in one place, drifting around from one unlucky world to the next, basically chasing hotspots where reality’s on the fritz and nightmares run wild. Are they real? Imaginary? Yes. Both. They exist in that sweet spot where you’re not sure if you’re awake or still stuck in some fever dream. How They Look First thing you notice? They’re weirdly gorgeous and also creepy as hell. Think skin that goes from pitch black to this wild, shimmery purple, pulsing like there’s liquid shadow underneath. Their eyes? Glowing, silver, kind of like moonlight seen through fog. And don’t get me started on their mouths—those grins stretch way too wide and never really go away. Some of ‘em have hair that looks like it’s made out of smoke or maybe the tail end of a comet. Their limbs are all elegant and too long, with fingers tipped by claws that twitch like they’re itching for something. Even if they walk and talk like people, there’s something off. Classic uncanny valley vibes. You feel it in your bones—air goes cold, and you might catch hushed voices just at the edge of hearing, like you’re in the world’s creepiest ASMR video. Culture, Or Whatever Passes For It Calling it a “society” is probably pushing it. Nyxarim do these temporary hangouts—dream-clusters, they call ‘em—somewhere in the Astral Plane or the nastier corners of dreamland. Picture a psychic group chat where they swap memories, chew on stolen fears, and basically vibe until they wander off again. It’s all kinda fluid. More mind-meld than village square. To them, feelings are worth more than gold. Nightmares? Straight-up food. Fear is the real deal, no filter, no sugarcoating. They love slipping into people’s dreams, poking around, snacking on terror, maybe picking up a few trade secrets. Some get into warlock stuff—cutting deals with eldritch nightmares or even the collective bad vibes of a planet that’s having a rough time. Philosophy, If You Wanna Call It That Reality? Paper-thin. Just a mass hallucination everyone’s desperately trying to believe in. Dreams are the real truth, and nightmares? That’s the rawest, truest stuff you’ll ever find. Nyxarim like to mess with the line between dreaming and waking—not out of spite, just because they honestly think they’re helping people see what’s real. They’re not big on gods, but they’re kind of groupies for ancient dream monsters or cosmic glitches that everyone else tries to forget. Their “religion” is more like ritual lucid dreaming, hopping out of their bodies, or chasing echoes of old emotions. Names Their names? Half lullaby, half horror movie. Sometimes it’s a name that sounds like a secret whispered in a nightmare. Like: - Zyrralith - Nyxavien - Thal’quess - Velmora - Xir’naleth If they’re trying to blend in, they’ll just swipe a name from whatever culture they’re haunting, usually something that sounds mysterious or just flat-out spooky. How Other Folks Feel About Them People don’t exactly roll out the welcome mat. Nyxarim are the definition of “outsider.” Elves and gnomes—you know, the dream-obsessed types—might get a kick out of them. Dwarves? Dragonborn? Not so much. Tieflings, weirdly enough, might treat them like distant cousins. Humans? Some are drawn in by the whole dark-and-brooding thing, others end up as their midnight snacks. But honestly, Nyxarim aren’t evil by default. Some are just lonely and looking for a friend, or maybe they’re after a little redemption. Others just wanna see what the regular world’s got to offer, where emotions are messy and nothing stays the same for long.

Posted Oct 15, 2025I see some glaring issues with this species.
1. While reading is fun, that amount of lore is too much for one paragraph. Break it up into sections by putting text in Header 2 instead of Paragraph.
2. The FONT AND COLOUR CHOICES on your traits, man! Just because you can make text look like that doesn't mean you should. 'Specially the yellow text for Innate Teleportation; that doesn't mesh with white backgrounds.
3. On the topic of Innate Teleportation, you are giving PCs Misty Step. While that's not bad when you give it good limits, per level is not a good limiting factor.
In general, you should be at the very least heavily capping the innate abilities of flight and teleportation when you design species (and/or giving it out at a later character level).
If you wanna get better at making more balanced and better sounding species, just take a look at how the official species are formatted. Take notes on them.

Posted Oct 15, 2025Also, don't advertise your species on other people's species. You look scummy.

Posted Oct 17, 2025To be blunt, someone of your experience should absolutely not be making a book. Those things require quite a lot of experience; you should take a while practicing balancing and properly formatting your homebrew.
On the other hand, though, I’m not your dad. Make the book if you’re feel extremely confident with yourself.
