Homebrew Chirop Species Details

The Chirop (pronounced Chee-Rup), more commonly known as Batfolk, are a species of small humanoids with webbed wings growing from their arms. They have incredible hearing, which they can use it place of sight. Due to this, they have developed a culture around night time activities; not that they are nocturnal, but many of the innate abilities are most useful in places and times where sight cannot be relied on, not limited to just the night, but also including things such as caverns, mines, and even the Underdark.

This proclivity for dark, out of the way places and business hours outside of the norm make them a rare sight throughout the realms they inhabit. Explorers often fight over Chirops for hire, especially ones with experience, as a Chirops short lifespan makes such individuals scarce.

Their appearance ranges greatly, with some Chirops being covered in fluffy fur, while others only have sparse patches of hair, similar to an adult Human. Some have large amounts of wing webbing extending from their ribs to their fingers, while some only have the wing webbing extend from their wrist to their elbows. No matter the size, shape, or appearance, the typical Chirop is agile and perceptive, making for capable adventurers.

Chirop Traits

Chirops have the following traits:

Creature Type

You are Humanoid.

Size

Your size is Small.

Speed

Your walking speed is 30 feet.

Flight

Because you have wings growing from your hands, you have a fly speed of 30ft as long as you are not wearing heavy armor or wielding a weapon that requires two hands.

Echolocation

Your acute sense of hearing allows you to detect things even when you can't rely on your sight. You gain 30 feet of blindsight, and have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing. You lose these abilities when you have the Deafened condition.

Wall Cling

You have the ability to cling to and hang from surfaces due to specialized digits. As long as your feet are not obstructed by something (IE. footwear), you can reduce your movement speed to 0 and hang off the sides of walls and ceilings. You will remain attached to the surface until you unlatch from it, are moved by another creature or object, or are rendered incapacitated or unconscious.
