Homebrew Avialae Species Details

Graceful and light-boned, the Avialae are aerial descendants of ancient raptors who have evolved sleek feathers and keen senses. Agile and expressive, they often serve as scouts, messengers, and performers — gliding through the skies or weaving through the canopy with effortless poise. Though they may vary in size and color, all Avialae share a deep love of open air, freedom, and flight.

Avialae Traits

As an Avialae, you have the following traits that reflect your heritage and connection to the skies: Glide, Wing Flap, Flight, Improved Flight, Talons, and Dramatic Colors.

Glide

When you fall at least 10 feet, you can use your reaction to spread your wings and glide up to your walking speed horizontally, taking no fall damage. You cannot gain height when gliding and must end your movement on solid ground or begin falling again.

Wing Flap

You can use your wings to propel yourself with a burst of air. As a bonus action, you can jump or ascend a distance equal to half your walking speed. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks. You can’t use this trait again until you touch solid ground.

Flight

At 8th level, you gain the ability to fly with your wings. You have a flying speed equal to half your walking speed. You cannot fly while wearing medium or heavy armor, or while carrying more than your Strength score in equipment weight.

Improved Flight

At 15th level, your flight improves. Your flying speed becomes equal to your walking speed. You can maintain flight indefinitely as long as you’re not wearing medium or heavy armor or carrying more than your Strength score allows.

Talons

Your feet end in sharp claws that count as natural weapons. You can make unarmed strikes with them, dealing 1d6 slashing damage + your Dexterity modifier instead of the normal bludgeoning damage. Your talons are considered finesse weapons for the purpose of attacks and effects.

Dramatic Colors

Your plumage is striking and expressive, naturally aiding in social display or concealment. You gain proficiency in your choice of Intimidation or Stealth. You make this choice when you create your character.
