Homebrew Aquarion Species Details

Aquarions are descendants of ancient experiments and divine blessings that merged mortal souls with the spirits of the Elemental Plane of Water. Many trace their origin to an event known as The Tidal Convergence, when planar rifts allowed water elementals to merge with arcane energies. The result was a race that carries both the adaptability of mortals and the ever-changing flow of water magic.

They are both healers and scholars by nature—beings of deep emotion, intuition, and balance. Aquarions believe that mana should flow as water does: never stagnant, always moving toward harmony. However, when their balance is broken—through anger, grief, or corruption—their water becomes volatile, dark, and freezing, capable of eroding all it touches.

Homelands and Society

Aquarions commonly dwell near coastlines, deep lakes, and leyline pools—places where mana and water intertwine. Their architecture favors fluid shapes and translucent materials, using water channels to power arcane mechanisms. Their societies value cooperation and adaptability, seeing stagnation as the greatest sin. Every Aquarion is taught the principle of “Mana Flows, So Must We.”

Scholars and artificers among them often become Aqua Engineers—those who forge living machines powered by water and mana (a tradition that inspired Idia’s “Arcane Aquarion Specialist” path).

Aquarion Traits

Your aquarion character has certain characteristics in common with all other genasi.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Primordial. Primordial is a guttural language, filled with harsh syllables and hard consonants. You also gain the ability to speak telepathically to anyone within 120ft of you.

Ability Score Increase

Your Intelligence score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age

Aquarion mature at about the same rate as elementals. They live indefinitely as elementals do.

Alignment

Independent and self-reliant, Aquarion tend toward a neutral alignment.

Elemental Form

(Starting at level 10+)

You can assume your true Elemental Aquarion Form, temporarily shedding your mortal limits and embodying the full flow of water and mana.

Transformation Details:

  • Duration: 1 hour (or until you end it as a bonus action)

  • Uses: Once per long rest

While in Elemental Form:

  • Your body becomes semi-liquid, shimmering with deep blue light and silver runes across your skin.

  • You gain resistance to necrotic and bludgeoning damage. You gain immunity to cold damage.

  • You can move through enemies’ spaces and through small gaps as water without provoking opportunity attacks.

  • You may use your reaction once per round to redirect damage dealt to an ally within 10 ft. to yourself, reducing it by your Intelligence modifier + proficiency bonus.

  • When you deal cold or necrotic damage, add your Intelligence modifier again to the damage total.

  • You are considered large while in this form, and when first entering an enemy's space, you deal 1d10 cold damage to it, which cannot be used again on the same target.

  • While in this form, you can only use spells that do not require material or sematic components. You may use weapons in this form and/or your slam attack.

When the form ends, you regain 1d10 + your level temporary hit points, used from your mana reservoir, as your mana stabilizes. However, if you end this form with 0 HP, you immediately make a DC 15 Constitution save or gain one level of exhaustion from elemental strain.

Visual: Your form glows with layered rings of light and current; your hair flows like liquid starlight, and your voice carries the faint echo of tides. The cursed element in you shows as black vapor rising from your aura, like shadow bleeding into ocean mist.

Size

Aquarion are as varied as their mortal parents but are generally built like humans, standing anywhere from 5 feet to over 7 feet tall. Your size is Medium while in this form, while you are considered large while in your elemental form.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet, and your swimming speed is 50 feet.

Liquid Grace

Your movement is as fluid as your nature. You have advantage on saving throws against being grappled or restrained, and can move through spaces as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing, provided water could flow through.

Water Affinity

You have resistance to cold damage. You can manipulate small amounts of water within 5 feet (as the Shape Water cantrip, cast without components). At level 15, you gain the ability to cast Maelstrom and Tsunami.

Amphibious Nature

You can breathe both air and water. You suffer no effects from water pressure or depth. Additionally, you are bonded with the Tome given to you as a child, granting you the ability to summon Cutie. Being attuned to the element of water, you gain bonuses to your stats, increasing one stat by 5 and decreasing two stats by 2 of your choice at level 15.

Aquatic Mana Reservoir

(Starting at level 6+)

You embody the flow of both water and mana. You may store up to 30% of your elemental essence in a small internal mana pool. Once per long rest, you can release this energy to heal yourself or a creature within 10 ft. for 1d10 HP.

This ability scales as follows:

  • Level 10: 2d10 HP

  • Level 14: 3d10 HP

  • Level 18: 4d10 HP

You can only restore this pool after a Greater Restoration spell is cast on you, or by meditating for 8 hours fully submerged in natural water.

Bonded Essence

Once per day, you can summon Cutie, your loyal fiendish familiar — a large elemental-construct hybrid born from your Abyssal Tome. If Cutie is destroyed, you must succeed on an Arcana Tool Check (DC 15 at Level 3, increasing by +1 every 3 levels, max DC 20) to reform its essence during a rest. On success, Cutie returns fully restored at dawn.
