Desert Orcs – Those Who Listen to the Sand
Desert Orcs are descendants of a blood-soaked lineage of deep-dwelling orcs, once ferocious raiders bound by absolute devotion to their god. Their faith was both their strength and their chains. When that divine bond was suddenly and irreversibly severed, entire clans were left abandoned—without guidance, without protection, and without purpose.
Cast out from the depths and rejected by the surface realms, they wandered aimlessly until fate drove them to a place where other races feared to tread: the endless deserts, where the sun devours the unprepared and the wind erases all traces of passage. In the silence of the dunes, they were forced to abandon old wars and forgotten gods, forging a new path of survival entirely their own.
The desert was never empty. Beneath the shifting sands moved beings older than orcish memory—wanderers that carved through the dunes like ships upon a sea. Their coming was felt before it was seen: the trembling of the ground, the sudden stillness of life, the slow rising of sand. They were the kings of this land, not as tyrants, but as guardians. Like the orcs, they claimed territory not out of conquest, but out of the need to endure.
The orcs learned to survive alongside the desert. They tamed scorpions, sand-beasts, and crawling horrors of the wastes, yet one creature remained beyond reach—the great sand worm, whose jaws were larger than an orc dwelling and whose movement could raise dunes like waves. And yet, in the worm, the orcs saw themselves: exiles, wanderers, protectors of a harsh homeland.
It was never about domination. It was never about chains or command.
It was about understanding.
Over time, a silent bond formed between Desert Orc and sand worm—deeper than obedience and stronger than fear. They learned to move with a shared will and a shared purpose. The orc provided intent, memory of the wider world, and the ability to choose. The worm answered with unmatched speed beneath the sand, colossal strength, and senses that could feel vibration miles away. Together, they were no longer rider and beast, but a single being moving through the wasteland.
Thus were born those known as the Dune Riders.
Not a horde. Not an army.
Only a shadow beneath the sand, a trembling of the ground, and the silence just before the desert itself begins to move.
It is said that they are no longer as bloodthirsty as their ancestors once were.
Their mystical insight allows them to sense the souls of the lost, wandering the desert wastelands.
Desert Orcs are tall and broad-shouldered, with skin ranging from ivory to warm golden hues. Their bodies shimmer in sunlight as grains of sand cling to their flesh. They have sharp, pointed ears and lower tusks resembling small fangs.
The young roam the dunes atop giant scorpions, while the elders still shine—beneath the setting sun, their skin glitters like golden dust.
Orc Traits
Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (approximately 6 to 7 feet tall)
Speed: 30 feet
Sandbound Senses
You have Sandbound Senses with a range of 120 feet.
You are attuned to the movement and breath of the desert.
You can perceive your surroundings even when sight fails.
You are not blinded by light obscurement caused by sand, dust, smoke, or fog.
In areas that are heavily obscured by sandstorms, dust clouds, smoke, or thick fog, you can perceive creatures and objects within 10 feet of you as if the area were lightly obscured instead.
This sense does not rely on sight and cannot be used to see through solid objects or magical darkness.
Sandbound Mind Sight
As an action, you attempt to attune your mind to the senses of a creature you can see within 30 feet of you.
The target must succeed on an Intelligence saving throw (DC = 10 + the target’s Intelligence saving throw modifier), or you briefly pierce its awareness.
On a failed save, you perceive a flash of the target’s senses for 1 round (6 seconds). During this time, you can see what the creature sees and hear what it hears, limited to the creature’s own senses.
If the target is a beast or monstrosity, you may attempt to instinctively influence it—such as frightening it, calming it, or mounting it if physically possible. Mounting a sand worm is only possible if you are 5th level or higher.
Golden Sand Carapace
You can coat your skin in the golden sand of your homeland. The sand settles into the cracks of your flesh, hardening your body like stone.
While this effect is active, your Armor Class increases by +5 for 1 minute. You can use this feature twice per long rest.
If you take 10 or more damage from a single attack while this effect is active, the hardened sand shatters painfully. The effect ends immediately, your Armor Class is reduced by 2, and you cannot use this feature again until you finish a long rest.
