Homebrew Beastkin Species Details
Beastkin are humanoids who share the blood and spirit of the wild. Whether furred, feathered, scaled, or something in between, each Beastkin carries the instincts and essence of the animal they resemble. Some are said to descend from druids who took on the shapes of beasts and never fully returned, while others believe they were born from nature’s will itself.
No two Beastkin are alike. A Bearkin may embody strength and patience, while a Foxkin moves through life with charm and cunning. Despite their diversity, all Beastkin share a deep, instinctive connection to the living world around them — a sense that they are not apart from nature, but a continuation of it.
Whether wandering as scouts, sages, or shapeshifters, Beastkin walk the border between civilization and the untamed wilds, carrying the primal truth that life itself is many-faced — and they are one of its reflections.
Beastkin Traits
Guided by instinct and nature’s spirit, Beastkin embody the traits of their animal kin — strength, cunning, or grace — and share an innate bond with all living creatures.Instinctive Communication
You possess an innate ability to connect with beasts through body language, sounds, and primal empathy.
A number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, you can use an action to attempt to communicate with a beast that can see or hear you within 30 feet. This connection lasts for up to 1 minute.
During this time, you can ask the beast up to two yes-or-no questions. The beast responds according to its instincts and understanding — it cannot convey complex concepts, but can express basic emotions or impressions such as fear, calm, hunger, anger, trust, or curiosity.
You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Natural Adaptation
Your form carries the unmistakable mark of your animal lineage — claws, fangs, keen eyes, or powerful lungs. Choose one of the following adaptations that best fits your Beastkin’s nature.
• Natural Weapons. You have claws, fangs, horns, or another natural weapon. You can use this to make an unarmed strike that deals 1d6 + your Strength or Dexterity modifier (your choice) of bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage.
• Keen Senses. You gain proficiency in the Perception skill, and your sense of smell or hearing is exceptionally sharp. You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on this sense.
• Amphibious. You can breathe both air and water, and you have a swimming speed equal to your walking speed.
• Agile Climber. You have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed.
• Sure-Footed. You have advantage on saving throws and ability checks made to resist being knocked prone.
• Glider. Using membranes, feathers, or a similar structure, you can glide short distances. When you fall, you can move 5 feet horizontally for every 1 foot you fall, and you take no damage from a controlled descent.
Once chosen, this adaptation reflects your physical nature and cannot easily be changed, except at your DM’s discretion when your character experiences a significant transformation.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and one additional language of your choice. This second language often reflects your Beastkin’s origins — the culture, environment, or people they grew up among.
Some Beastkin raised among civilized folk learn regional tongues or trade pidgins, while others who dwell in the wild might know Druidic, Sylvan, or even Primordial.
Your DM may allow you to select a rare or unique language if it suits your character’s backstory or the animal traits that shape your nature.
