Homebrew 𖤍 Origamar (2014 & 2024) Species Details

Origin & Overview. Origamar are beings crafted from enchanted kraft paper, folded in intricate patterns inspired by the art of origami. They resemble humanoids — with arms, legs, and a head — their bodies marked by visible creases, stylized motifs, and above all, a luminous core embedded in their chest, visible through an open pattern in their paper frame. This core pulses faintly and serves as the source of their life essence.

They were born in the magical forges of mage-artisans or within workshops of forgotten artificers, slowly absorbing ambient magic from countless sources over time. Though their paper bodies appear fragile and lightweight, the magic woven into their folds grants them remarkable durability.

Personality and Culture. Each Origamar views their body as a work of art: every fold represents a lesson learned, and every pattern a memory preserved. Some redraw or reshape their markings as they grow, much like others change garments to reflect their journey.

The “Long Folds,” known as Origamara, are often the builders and protectors of their kind, while the “Short Folds,” or Origamari, excel in exploration, artistry, and subtlety.

Their voices carry a faint rustling sound — a delicate whisper like paper brushing against itself.

Appearance and Expression. Origamar vary greatly in appearance — some display simple matte paper, while others bear golden ink, floral embossing, or brushstroke-like runes.
The color and glow of their core may reflect their nature or magic: blue for calm, red for passion, green for vitality, and so on.
They move gracefully, their folds shifting softly with each step, as if the wind itself remembers the hands that shaped them.

Creator’s notes: An Origamar(a/i) can look as humanoid as you want, animal-inspired, highly cartoonish, or even alien-looking. Kraft paper can take any shape you desire. You can even base it on an existing species.

Traits to add for the 2014's version. Ability Score Increase & Languages.

𖤍 Origamar (2014 & 2024) Traits

As an Origamar, you are truly unique. You deserve equally unique traits.

Ability Score Increase (2014)

Your Dexterity score increases by 2. Choose one other ability score to increase by 1.

Languages (2014)

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.

Creature Type

You are both a Construct and a living creature.

Your body is supple, light, and infused with magic. You have resistance to poison damage and immunity to disease.
You do not need to eat, drink, or breathe.
Instead of sleeping, you enter an inactive rest for 4 hours, during which you remain conscious of your surroundings. You can still be affected by magical sleep.
For all other game effects, you are considered a Humanoid.

Size & Weight

Your size depends on your folding type:

Long Folds (Origamara) are Medium, standing between 4 and 7 feet tall (1.20 and 2.15 meters tall).
Short Folds (Origamari) are Small, standing between 2 and 4 feet tall (60 and 120 centimeters tall).

You weigh between 1 and 5 kilograms (2 and 11 pounds), depending on your size and magical density.

Speed

Your walking speed is 30 feet (9 meters).
Your gliding speed is 20 feet (6 meters).

Your gliding ability is detailed in the "Light Body" trait.

Darkvision

Thanks to the soft glow emitted by your core, you can see in darkness up to 60 feet (18 meters).
In complete darkness, you see only shades of gray.

Light Body

Your naturally light form allows you to glide gently when falling.
You take no falling damage, and you fall at half the normal speed for a creature of your size.
If the fall distance equals or exceeds your walking speed, you may also move horizontally while gliding.

Paper Form

As an action, you can flatten and refold your body, reducing your size category by one (M → S; S → Tiny). You become as thin as a sheet of kraft paper.
While in this form, you cannot take actions or bonus actions, but you can move normally.
For 1 minute, you have advantage on Strength (Athletics) and Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks made to climb, crawl, or squeeze through tight spaces.

Armor Absorption

An Origamar cannot wear armor in the conventional sense.
Instead, you can absorb the essence of a suit of armor (or wearable equipment) that you touch and own. You then gain that armor’s Armor Class (AC) and any relevant effects as if you were wearing it.
If you absorb a new set of armor, the previous one reappears intact at your feet.
If your core is destroyed (meaning "if you die"), all absorbed items are rematerialized but may be damaged depending on the severity of the event.
