Homebrew Wetherjude Species Details

Wetherjude

Classification: Subterranean Humanoid
Temperament: Wary, Defensive
Habitat: Damp forests, caves, and overgrown fields

The Wetherjude is a tall, broad, humanoid worm-like creature known for its faceless form and unsettling stillness. Its skin is pale and ridged, capable of subtle movement beneath the surface as if alive on its own. Despite its eerie presence, the Wetherjude is not inherently hostile; it avoids conflict and prefers solitude in dark, moist environments.

Lacking eyes or ears, it perceives its surroundings through a constant vibration sense extending roughly twenty feet in all directions. This radar-like awareness allows it to navigate, locate water, and detect approaching life forms with uncanny precision.

Sunlight is harmful to the Wetherjude. After three to four hours above ground, its skin begins to dry and crack, forcing it to retreat underground. There, it rests and rejuvenates for about an hour before returning to the surface, calm and rehydrated.

The Wetherjude sustains itself by absorbing water directly through its skin, much like a plant root. It draws moisture from soil, rain, or even the air itself, allowing it to survive long periods without food. While typically docile, it can become dangerously aggressive if threatened or provoked, striking with surprising speed and strength before disappearing beneath the earth once more.

Summary:
Neither fully predator nor prey, the Wetherjude exists as a quiet balance in nature — a creature that embodies patience, endurance, and the thin line between peace and peril.

Wetherjude Traits

Burrow Sense. The Wetherjude detects vibrations within 20 feet, sensing movement even through walls or soil. Sunlight Weakness. Prolonged sunlight dries its skin; after 3 hours in direct light, it gains 1 level of exhaustion per additional hour. Moisture Absorption. While underground or in damp areas, the Wetherjude regains 1 hit point every 10 minutes as it absorbs water through its skin. Earthen Retreat. The Wetherjude can burrow into soft soil to hide or recover, remaining underground for up to an hour to heal and cool its body. Cautious Temperament. Usually passive unless provoked, it may defend itself fiercely when threatened.
