Homebrew Awakened Skeleton Species Details

While most mindless skeletons serve as thralls, a rare few awaken with fragments of memory, emotion, or will—these are the Awakened Skeletons. These sentient undead wrestle with their hollow existence. They recall echoes of life—voices, habits, or flashes of memory—but are haunted by the knowledge that their souls are fractured, and will likely never be whole again. Some wander in search of who they once were, others embrace their undeath as a second chance. Most mortals fear or despise skeletons, but legends tell of those who earned redemption or renown despite their deathly form.

Awakened Skeleton Traits

As an undead skeletal creature, you have the following traits:

Deviant Sentience

Despite your lack of eyes, your magical sentience grants you 60ft of darkvision. You also do not share the obedience and compliance of your enthralled kin, granting you advantage on any effect that targets and controls undead, such as Turn Undead or Control Undead.

Undead Nature

Thanks to being a non-living being, you don't have any need to eat, drink, sleep, or breathe. Your resting hours simply consist of lying dormant for 4 hours where you remain aware of surroundings and take the time to magically repair bone fractures, and joint wear, ideally taking place in a coffin. Your size is determined by what creature you were before you died, ranging from small if, for example, your were a halfling in life, or medium if you were a human, however you do not gain the racial benefits of whatever creature you were in life. You are also ageless, showing no signs of deterioration as the years pass.

Ability Score Increase

Your undead form proves to be resilient, and your former stature remains a decent enough fraction of what it once was, granting you a bonus to your constitution, and either strength or dexterity.

Necrotic Resilience

Flesh decay is much hastier than bone decay, granting you an innate resistance to necrotic damage.

Poison Immunity

Your lack of innards and an immune system negates any poisonous effects inflicted upon you, automatically winning you any drinking competitions.

Brittle Bones

Your lack of flesh makes your femur look particularly easy to shatter with a mace, granting you an unfortunate vulnerability to bludgeoning damage.

Undead Fortitude

Your reanimation has granted you the tenacity of the undead. When damage reduces you to 0 hit points, you can make a Constitution saving throw with a DC equal to 5 + the damage taken, unless the damage is radiant or from a critical hit. On a success, you drop to 1 hit point instead. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.

Skeletal Composition

Because of your skeletal body, you interact differently with healing and equipment, allowing your armor or clothing to slightly adjust to your bony frame to fit better, as well as certain healing spells and magic item having no effect on you. Other spells that explicitly have different effects when targeted towards undead use the different effects.

Languages

You can understand Common and one other language of your choice. Whether you can speak those languages depends on your Reanimation Scar.

Reanimation Scar

When you were reanimated, you may choose what burden you bear from the process. Some skeletons are risen without their memory, others are speechless and endlessly search for a means to express themselves, while others may simply have the magical capabilities to ignore this drawback.

Aura of the Grave

The necrotic energy within you radiates outward, chilling the air and unsettling foes.

Starting at 5th level, you can emit an aura of undeath as a bonus action. For 1 minute, creatures of your choice within 20 feet that start their turn there take necrotic damage equal to 1d4 + your proficiency bonus (minimum 1), and hostile creatures have disadvantage on saving throws against being frightened while in the aura.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.

The damage becomes 2d4 at the 11th level, 3d4 at the 16th level, and 4d4 at the 19th level. At the 11th level, hostile creatures automatically fail any saving throws against being frightened.
