Homebrew Civilized Gnoll Species Details
Overview
Civilized Gnolls are a rare offshoot of their savage kin—creatures who have broken the chains of demonic influence and embraced order, reason, and the pursuit of a peaceful life. While most gnolls still roam as feral scavengers and bloodthirsty raiders in service to Yeenoghu, these gnolls took another path, guided by courage, curiosity, or divine intervention. They sought understanding, leaving behind the wastelands to dwell among cities and kingdoms, proving that even those born from chaos can find redemption.
Appearance
Civilized Gnolls retain their wild kin’s physical features—tall, lean, and powerful, with coarse fur ranging from sandy yellow to dark brown, spotted or striped like hyenas. Their long muzzles, sharp teeth, and predatory eyes remain unmistakably beastly, though many adorn themselves with jewelry, tattoos, or fine clothing to display individuality and sophistication. Despite their feral appearance, their posture is upright, their voices articulate, and their demeanor surprisingly composed.
Society
Most Civilized Gnolls live as craftsmen, scholars, or guards within multicultural cities, often forming small, tight-knit communities where they can support one another and teach their young the ways of civility. Many worship gods of redemption, civilization, or community—such as Tyr, Erathis, or even the Morninglord Lathander—believing that order and compassion can cleanse the darkness of their lineage.
However, acceptance is hard-earned. Prejudice follows them everywhere, and many must work twice as hard to earn trust. Because of this, Civilized Gnolls value loyalty and honor above all, cherishing allies who see them for who they are rather than what they once were.
Personality
Civilized Gnolls often possess a stoic calm that hides a storm within. They struggle daily with the pull of their primal instincts—hunger, rage, and thrill of the hunt—but channel these urges into discipline, craftsmanship, or heroism. They are protectors of those who give them a chance, and fierce defenders of the homes that accepted them.
They are known for their infectious laughter, often mistaken for the cackles of their savage cousins, but among the civilized, it symbolizes joy, relief, and triumph over their cursed past.
