Homebrew DeoRoyd Species Details
The Deoxlix are a rare and enigmatic species, believed to have originated from ancient experiments that fused arcane energy with living strands of DNA. Their bodies are in a constant state of flux, shimmering with faint, prismatic patterns beneath translucent skin as their cells analyze and adapt to every new stimulus. This perpetual evolution grants them extraordinary versatility—Deoxlix can sprout wings for flight, webbed digits for swimming, or develop adhesive pads for climbing sheer surfaces, often shifting between these adaptations in the blink of an eye.
Deoxlix are insatiably curious, driven by a compulsion to experience, learn, and evolve. Their minds process information at remarkable speed, allowing them to mimic languages, fighting styles, and even magical techniques after brief exposure. Many Deoxlix communities are nomadic, thriving in the most inhospitable regions of the world—mountaintops, ocean trenches, and forgotten ruins, all in pursuit of new knowledge and challenges.
One of their most distinctive powers is their ability to unleash concentrated blasts of radiant light. Drawing upon the bio-arcane energy in their DNA, a Deoxlix can emit searing beams capable of blinding foes, burning through obstacles, or illuminating pitch darkness. This light is not merely physical; it disrupts magic and can reveal illusions or invisible entities, making Deoxlix invaluable in mystical investigations and combat.
Perhaps the most unsettling aspect of the Deoxlix is their relationship with death. When a Deoxlix encounters a recently deceased creature, they can inject a fragment of their own essence into the corpse, overriding its biology and animating it as a vessel. The resulting form is a blend of the original being and Deoxlix traits—often sprouting iridescent patterns, or even manifesting new abilities as the Deoxlix's DNA integrates with the host. This process is not necromancy, but a unique biological takeover, and the animated body is under the Deoxlix's complete control.
Unique Attributes:
- Adaptive Evolution: Deoxlix can rapidly alter their physiology to survive extreme conditions or gain new abilities, such as growing gills, claws, or wings as needed.
- Genetic Memory: By absorbing biological material or observing a skill, Deoxlix can temporarily access memories or abilities, making them quick learners in both combat and social situations.
- Radiant Pulse: Their blasts of light can be tuned to heal allies, disrupt magical effects, or damage foes, depending on the Deoxlix’s intent.
- Corpse Integration: When taking over a corpse, Deoxlix can access some of the deceased’s memories and abilities, but risk fragmenting their own sense of self if done too often or with particularly strong-willed hosts.
- Prismatic Camouflage: Their shifting skin patterns allow them to blend into nearly any environment, granting advantages in stealth and evasion.
Deoxlix are both revered and feared by other races, seen as living embodiments of change and adaptation. Their presence in a party brings unpredictable advantages, as well as the lingering question of what new form—or fate—they might embrace next.
DeoRoyd Traits
Adapt to surviveAge
Deoxlix mature rapidly, reaching adulthood by 10 years old, but their lifespans are unpredictable—some live only a few decades, while others adapt to survive for centuries.
Alignment
Deoxlix are curious and adaptable, tending toward neutral alignments, but individuals may vary widely.
Size
DeoRoyd are similar in build to humans, ranging from 5 to 10 feet tall. Your size is Medium or large.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Adaptive Physiology
As an action, you can alter your body to gain one of the following benefits for 1 hour:
- You gain a fly speed of 30 feet (cannot fly if wearing medium or heavy armor).
- You gain a swim speed of 30 feet and can breathe underwater.
- You gain a climb speed of 30 feet and advantage on checks made to avoid being grappled or restrained.
Radiant Pulse
- All creatures in a 15-foot cone must make a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier) or be blinded until the end of your next turn and take 1d8 radiant damage (half on a successful save).
- Alternatively, you can use this energy to heal an ally within 10 feet for 1d8 hit points.
The damage and healing increase to 2d8 at 5th level, 3d8 at 11th level, and 4d8 at 17th level. You can use this ability once per short or long rest.
Genetic Assimilation
When you observe a creature perform a skill check, attack, or spell, you can mimic that action with advantage on your next attempt within the same hour. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Corpse Integration
As an action, you may infect a Small or Medium humanoid corpse that has died within the last minute, animating it for up to 1 hour as a vessel under your control. While inhabiting the corpse, you gain access to one feature or trait the creature possessed in life (at the DM’s discretion), but your own hit points and abilities remain unchanged. When the effect ends, the corpse is destroyed, and you return to your own body. You must finish a long rest before using this trait again.
Prismatic Camouflage
You can alter your skin to blend with your surroundings. As a bonus action, you gain advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks for 10 minutes. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.
Exo Skeleton
As an action, you can rapidly harden your outer layer, forming a temporary exoskeleton that negates all damage and special effects from a single source (such as one attack, spell, or trap) that targets you before the start of your next turn. While the exoskeleton is active, you become immune to all damage, conditions, and harmful effects from that source.
Once the exoskeleton has absorbed an effect, it immediately dissolves, and you cannot use this ability again until you finish a long rest. If the exoskeleton is not triggered before the start of your next turn, the effect ends and the ability is still expended.
