Homebrew Armored Bear Species Details
Armored Bears are towering, intelligent ursine warriors known for their immense strength, thick iron-hard hide, and fierce sense of honor. Resembling massive polar or grizzly bears, these creatures walk comfortably on four or two legs, speak in deep rumbling voices, and forge their own destinies with tooth and claw. Many Armored Bears craft or commission custom-fitted plating, but even without metal they are naturally protected by hide as tough as steel and claws sharp enough to carve stone.
Though intimidating in appearance, Armored Bears value oaths, honor, and mutual respect. They prefer straightforward actions, clear intentions, and honest combat. Their social groups—called “circles”—are small but deeply loyal, bound by shared purpose rather than birth. Adventuring Armored Bears often seek to test their prowess, repay a life-debt, or defend a companion who earned their trust.
Armored Bear Traits
Armored Bears share the following traits.Ability score increase
Your Strength score increases by 2 and your Constitution score increases by 1.
Size
You are Large. Your space is 10 feet by 10 feet, but your reach is the same as a Medium creature unless otherwise noted.
Natural armor
Your hide is as tough as forged plates. When you are not wearing armor, your AC equals 13 + your Constitution modifier. You can use a shield normally.
Claws
Your claws are natural melee weapons with which you are proficient. They deal 1d8 slashing damage on a hit and are treated as martial weapons. You can use Two-Weapon Fighting with your claws, and they cannot be disarmed.
Beast Resilience
You have advantage on saving throws against being frightened. Because your a big bear.
Keen Senses
You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.
Languages
You can speak Common and Bear. The Bear language is a deep, rumbling tongue made of growls, clicks, and chest-resonant tones.
Armored Bear Training
You gain proficiency in the Perception skill and with Smith’s Tools. Armored Bears rely heavily on their keen senses to track movement, detect threats, and read their environment with sharp instinct. Their strong craftsmanship traditions also extend to maintaining and repairing their armor plating, giving them natural skill with Smith’s Tools.
