Homebrew Batfolk Species Details

Batfolk cling to cavern ceilings, roosting in large colonies. They are not known for tunneling but prefer to inhabit natural caves or excavations of other creatures. Batfolk are found throughout the Underdark, but they are just as likely to be found roosting in dark attics or basements of abandoned structures near the outskirts of towns.

Batfolk are omnivores that scavenge mostly for fruits and insects. They prefer not to eat the flesh of larger animals but will drink their blood, or eat organ meats if desperate. Much like vampire bats, batfolk are stealthy enough to land on large beasts and drink their blood without being noticed.

When at rest, batfolk can become torpid. Torpor is a state of decreased activity where the body temperature and metabolism decreases. In such a state Batfolk may reduce their energy expenditure by up to 50%. To enter a torpid state batfolk must be at rest and hanging upside down from their feet, a posture known as roosting.
