Homebrew Awakened Familiar Species Details

Across realms touched by wild magic, witchcraft, or elemental energies, familiars and beloved pets occasionally “awaken.” Their minds sharpen, instincts elevate, and their souls open to adventure. Some remain like animals in body — small, soft, or feathered — while others show unusual quirks of power from the magic that awakened them.

They rarely speak with their mouths, but they understand far more than most humanoids expect. Whether telepathically gifted or simply emotionally intuitive, these awakened creatures carry loyalty, curiosity, and surprising heroism into the world.

Awakened Familiar/Pet Reference Choice

After creating your character, you may choose your Creature Reference Type by going to the “Extras” tab on your character sheet. From there, select whether your character is treated as a Familiar or a Pet for roleplay and thematic purposes. This choice does not change your ability scores, traits, or mechanics—it simply determines the flavor, instincts, and background that guide your awakened companion’s personality and origins.

Awakened Familiar Traits

They keep the instincts of their original form but gain the agency, intelligence, and fate of a true hero.

Ability Score Increase

When you create your character, increase three ability scores by 1 each.

(You are awakened—your mind functions like any other PC.)

Creature Type

Beast (Awakened)

Size

Same as your base familiar/pet species (Tiny or Small).
If the base creature is Tiny, you may choose to be Small, representing magical growth.

Speed

Your base creature’s walking or flying speed (you keep whatever is appropriate).

Language

You understand Common and one other language of your choice.

  • You cannot speak, unless your base animal could (rare).

  • You can communicate simple emotions, warnings, and ideas through sound, gestures, or behavior.

  • If you gain telepathy from a class, feat, spell, or awakening trait, you may “speak” mentally.

Telepathic Voice

If the DM allows, Awakened Familiar & Pets can gain telepathy at level 3, symbolizing mental growth.

Awakened Insticts

You gain proficiency in two of the following, representing your animal nature:

  • Perception

  • Stealth

  • Acrobatics

  • Survival

  • Insight

If your base familiar/pet already had major sensory abilities (like Keen Senses), you keep them.

Natural Form

You keep the natural attacks of your species:

  • Bite, claws, talons, sting, etc.
These deal damage appropriate for a PC (1d4 or 1d6, depending on the animal).

You can hold light equipment using your form’s natural capabilities:

  • A cat or mouse might carry items in a harness.

  • A raven or owl may wear ring-mounted tools.

  • A frog might use their mouth or sling-bag equipment.

A DM may allow magical custom gear.

Awakened Intelligence

Your mind is sharper than the average creature of your type.

Choose one:

  • Spell-Touched: You know one cantrip of your choice (Wis/Int/Cha based on your choice).

  • Trained Mind: Gain proficiency in one Intelligence skill.

  • Intuitive Bond: You gain the ability to communicate telepathically with one creature you are very close to, up to 60 ft. (familiars may retain this bond with their former masters).

Familiar Heritage

Choose the heritage based on the original creature you evolved from.

Beast of Fur (Cat, Fox, Ferret, etc.)

  • You can move through any space large enough for a creature one size smaller than you

Your life now has meaning beyond instinct.
