Homebrew Changeling (Rakshasa) Species Details
Origin
The Changelings, or Rakshasa in their native tongue, originate from the Faewylds, a realm where fluidity and change are the essence of reality. Unlike the malevolent shapechangers found in mortal myths, the Rakshasa are not inherently deceptive or malicious; rather, they are beings of fluid identity who reflect the world around them like living mirrors. They possess little magical aptitude in the traditional sense, but their very existence is a testament to the mutable nature of the Faewylds. While some form loose, ephemeral enclaves in bioluminescent groves or beneath the boughs of ancient trees, they have no formal settlements, often existing as nomadic wanderers driven by an insatiable curiosity to learn and experience the vast multiverse.
Appearance
In their natural form, Changelings possess a lithe, chameleon-like physique with scaled skin that subtly shifts in hue to reflect their mood or surroundings. They are generally Medium in size, mimicking humanoids or beastfolk with similar body structures. Their limbs are dexterous and slightly elongated, contributing to their natural agility, while their fingers and toes feature minute gripping pads for climbing. Their faces are distinctly alien, characterized by large, reflective eyes with slit pupils that can shift color at will. Many possess small, ridge-like horns or spines along their brows, and some display faint frilled crests or patterns resembling the bioluminescent flora of their home plane. However, their true gift is transformation. Unlike simple illusionists, they can physically alter their body structure, texture, and features—growing tails, changing skeletal shapes, or imitating fur and feathers—to mimic a wide range of beings.
Roleplaying Your Changeling
Changelings are a fluid race, offering deep roleplaying opportunities centered on identity and adaptation. Their sense of self is ever-evolving, shaped by experience and emotion, leading them to constantly question the nature of existence. To enrich your Changeling’s personality, you might select the plane or lifestyle that defines your character’s outlook:
Background: Faewylds (The Rakshasa) Those who remain in their homeland or embrace their heritage often reject the name "Changeling" in favor of "Rakshasa." They wear their true, reptilian forms with pride, seeing their shifting nature as a sign of nobility. These individuals often act as storytellers, sages, or guides, embodying the whimsy and fluid reality of the Faewylds. They tend to be bold, colorful, and unashamed of their alien appearance.
Background: Mortalum (The Masked) In the rigid societies of Mortalum, many Changelings choose to hide in plain sight. They live as integrated citizens, adopting a specific persona (or several) to blend effortlessly into structured life. These Changelings are often cautious and secretive, using their gifts to serve as spies, diplomats, or simply survivors who challenge definitions of self from the shadows.
Background: Plane of Mystery (The Enigma) Drawn to the enigmatic weave where truth and illusion blur, these Changelings are seekers of the unknown. They often embrace the surreal, using their shapechanging abilities not just for disguise, but to explore the boundaries of what is real. They tend to be cryptic, philosophical, and deeply inquisitive, often serving as intermediaries between the known and the unknown.
Background: The Wanderer Refusing to settle in any one reality, Wanderers live on the road, driven by a thirst for novelty. They adopt new faces as easily as one changes clothes, immersing themselves in different cultures to learn their secrets before moving on. These Changelings are often playful, observant, and impossible to pin down, valuing freedom above all else.
Background: Custom You may define a unique origin or "Soul Name" for your Changeling. While they adopt many aliases, most keep a secret "soul name"—such as Xhai'ral or Voshak—that holds deep meaning and defines their true core amidst their shifting masks.
Alignment
Changeling alignments are as fluid as their forms. They rarely gravitate toward rigid Lawful alignments, preferring the freedom of Chaos or the balance of Neutrality. They are generally not malicious, but their inquisitive nature and disregard for social norms can make them appear unpredictable or trickster-like to others.
The Unseen
Because of myths surrounding malevolent shapechangers, Changelings are often viewed with suspicion or fear by those who do not understand them. This prejudice forces many to live "unseen" lives, concealing their true nature to avoid persecution or to gain an advantage in societies that would otherwise shun them. This leads to a solitary existence for some, or a life of constantly looking over one's shoulder.
Fluid Identity
A Changeling's identity is not fixed. They may change their names, appearances, and even genders throughout their lives to suit their evolving sense of self. This constant flux can sometimes lead to an internal struggle—a "fluid identity" where the line between their true self and their masks becomes blurred.
Timeless Visage
While they live mortal lifespans, Changelings rarely show traditional signs of aging. Their ability to control their physical form allows them to maintain a youthful or peak-physical appearance until the very end of their lives, masking the passage of time from the outside world.
