Homebrew Aven Species Details
A winged people who originated on the Elemental Plane of Air, Aven soar through the sky wherever they wander. The first Aven served the Wind Dukes of Aaqa—mighty beings of air—and were imbued with a measure of their masters’ power over winds. Their descendants still command echoes of that power.
From below, Aven look like large birds and thus are sometimes called Aarakocra or birdfolk. Only when they roost on a branch or walk across the ground is their Humanoid nature clear. Standing upright, Aven are typically about 5 feet tall, and they have long, narrow legs that taper to sharp talons. Feathers cover their bodies—usually red, orange, yellow, brown, or gray. Their heads are also avian, often resembling those of parrots or eagles.
Aven Traits
Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 4–7 feet tall) or Small (about 2–4 feet tall), chosen when you select this species
Speed: 30 feet
Flight
You have a Fly Speed equal to your Speed. You can’t use this Fly Speed if you’re wearing Medium or Heavy armor.
Keen Eyesight
You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Talons
When you use your Unarmed Strike and deal damage, you can choose to slash with you talons. You deal Slashing damage equal to 1d6 plus your Strength modifier, instead of the normal damage of an Unarmed Strike.
Wing Beat
As a Bonus Action, you beat your wings to create a 10-foot Emanation of wind until the end of your turn. Each creature within the Emanation must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus your Strength modifier and your Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, the target has the Prone condition or is pushed 5 feet away from you (your choice). You can then fly up to half your Fly Speed.
In the Emanation, gas or vapor is dispersed, candles and similar unprotected flames are extinguished. Protected flames, such as those of lanterns, dance wildly and have a 50 percent chance of being extinguished.
Once you use this Bonus Action, you can’t use it again until you finish a Short or Long Rest.
