Homebrew Clay-Born Species Details
Clay-Born bodies bear the marks of their making. Inscribed sigils, maker’s seals, or ritual fractures often remain visible upon their forms. Their voices may sound hollow or earthen, their movements deliberate rather than fluid. Yet within many Clay-Born stirs a fully realized mind—curious, reflective, and increasingly difficult to dismiss as an object.
To encounter a Clay-Born is to confront an uncomfortable truth: the line between tool and person is not as solid as law insists.
Clay-Born in the Empire
Within the Empire, the legal status of the Clay-Born is inconsistent. In some jurisdictions, they are recognized as citizens or wards of the state. In others, they remain property, bound by contract or ownership. A Clay-Born’s rights may change simply by crossing an island or falling under a different magistrate’s authority.
Judges debate their status. Magisters argue over the intent of their creation. Common folk may pity them, fear them, or rely on them without reflection. Few Clay-Born are allowed to forget that their existence is conditional.
Clay-Born Culture
Clay-Born do not share a unified culture. Those who awaken often adopt the customs of the people they live among, though many develop private rituals of maintenance, reflection, or remembrance tied to their origins. Some keep the name given by their maker; others choose a new one to mark their independence.
Among Clay-Born communities—rare and often hidden—stories circulate of unfinished rituals, forgotten creators, and ancient constructs that never awakened at all. These tales are treated not as history, but as warning.

Clay-Born names often reflect their function, origin, or chosen identity.

Playing a Clay-Born
When you choose to play a Clay-Born, consider the following questions:
- Were you always self-aware, or did you awaken later?
- Do you still serve the purpose you were made for?
- Are you recognized as a person where you live—or tolerated as property?
- What does freedom mean to something that was never meant to choose?
Clay-Born adventurers are often driven by necessity rather than ambition. Some seek legal recognition. Others search for their creator. A few simply want to decide, for the first time, what they exist to do.
Nephilim Markings and the Clay-Born
Clay-Born do not undergo the coming-of-age ritual. Therefore, if a Clay-Born manifests Nephilim Markings it would be an event that unsettles even the gods’. Whether this represents divine acknowledgment, a flaw in the ritual of creation, or something entirely new is fiercely debated.
For a Clay-Born, such markings raise a troubling possibility:
If the divine can touch you, were you ever just an object at all?
