Homebrew Crocodilian Species Details

Crocodilians are large, aggressive, natural predators and are a subrace rarity from the Lizardfolk. Though typically found in tropical and swampy places, they may be found in any location where there is sufficient standing water. They are equally adept at living in large colonies or maintaining more solitary lifestyles. Where they gather, a pecking order will naturally form, with the biggest and strongest members taking dominance. Fights for dominance are common, and defeated alphas must either accept their lower position or be exiled from the group, if not killed outright. If food is plentiful, a colony may settle into a sort of stability.

Where colonies do form and stability is found, they can number from a couple of dozen to hundreds. Crocodilians are capable of construction, mostly using natural materials. Ramshackle huts made of wood, leather, and thatch are most common, oftentimes connected to or with access to the water, not unlike a beaver dam. Metal is uncommon in crocodilian colonies, and what can be found are pieces that have been scavenged from travelers who got too close.

Crocodilians are a rare sight in populated areas, as their typically aggressive nature and most people’s naturally fearful disposition towards them do not mix well. The more even tempered among them may find acceptance in certain places, and in a few swamps and jungles they may even be able to use a sort of drop system with townspeople to, in effect, trade.

Crocodilians can be terrible opponents in battle, and particularly in watery environments, where their natural swimming ability and hunting prowess make for a lethal combination. Their thick, leathery hide provides a natural defense against the offenses of their prey, as well as the sharp metal weapons of man.

If the attack hits, it deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1d10 plus your Strength modifier. The creature must succeed on a Strength saving throw of 10 plus your Strength modifier or be knocked prone. You can't use this trait again until you finish a short or long rest.
