Homebrew Awakened Duck Species Details

Beak and Feather

Their oily coat has the ability to shed water quickly, while large webbed feet grant them swiftness over water. Their beaks are weapons, and many awakened ducks have been known to carefully sharpen theirs for protection.

 

Avian Mannerisms

Their wings are thick and built for short bursts of speed. Their ability to leap into action quickly makes them great warriors or assassins.

Awakened Duck Traits

As a Duck, you have certain traits in common with your fellow bird. Being able to fly at high speed starting at 1st level is exceptionally effective in certain circumstances and exceedingly dangerous in others. As a result, playing an Duck requires special consideration by your DM.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Age

Ducks reach maturity by age 1. Compared to humans, Awakened Ducks don’t usually live longer than 30 years.

Alignment

Most Ducks are Chaotic and rarely choose sides when it comes to law and Lawful.

Size

Awakened Ducks are small in size most not weighing more than 12 to 13 pounds.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 25 feet.

Flight

You have a flying speed of 50 feet. To use this speed, you can’t be wearing medium or heavy armor.

Talons

You are proficient with your unarmed strikes, which deal 1d4 slashing damage on a hit.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, Duck, and Elvish.

A calm lake or pond is where you will find the common duck. Awakened ducks however, have been known to build small huts near the edge of a peaceful oasis. While awakened ducks don't prefer the company of their lesser intelligent brothers and sisters. They have been known to become angry with humans or other beasts that hunt them. Many awakened ducks have been known to attack or even kill those who hunt their race for sport or food.

 

Great Purpose

Awakened ducks tend to be chaotic neutral by nature. They are aggressive and easily angered. Awakened ducks are not seekers of peace or companions. They tend to be bitter at the cruel hand they've been dealt. They're sentient and understand they are merely a duck. This makes them fearful and envious of other creatures. This envy becomes extreme jealousy that tends to make the duck angry with its world as well as its creator.

Duck Names

As with much of their speech, duck names include clicks, trills, and whistles to the point that other peoples have a difficult time pronouncing them. Typically, a name has two to four syllables with the sounds acting as connectors. When interacting with other races, ducks may use nicknames gained from people they meet or shortened forms of their full names.

A Duck of either gender may have one of these short names:  Qorr, Quss, Quaf, Quierk, QWalleek, Qurreek, or Qweeeeed. Many awakened ducks tend to name themselves after places they've visited or heroes they've read about.

Backgrounds that are most appropriate for Ducks include the Warrior or assassin
