Homebrew Awakaned Skeleton Species Details

Awakened skeletons are the remnants of the dead who rise not as mindless servants, but as thinking beings bound together by lingering will. Where most undead are animated through crude necromancy or forced obedience, an awakened skeleton retains a fragment of identity; memory, purpose, or desire powerful enough to outlast death itself.

These beings may claw their way back from dust choked crypts, forgotten battlefields, or shallow graves where death was unfinished. Some are stirred by deliberate necromantic rites, others by curses, ancient magic, or the indifferent designs of greater entities. Whatever the cause, their animation is incomplete: flesh is gone, breath is absent, yet awareness remains. They walk as echoes of who they once were, clattering forms driven by thoughts that refuse to fade.

Awakened skeletons vary widely in temperament. Some cling to old vows, guarding ruins, bloodlines, or ideals long since abandoned by the living. Others wander as philosophers and observers, detached from mortal concerns, pondering identity, mortality, and the meaning of a life already spent. A few embrace their second existence with grim ambition, using their unnerving nature and tireless bodies to carve new destinies from brittle bone and hard earned experience.

Though freed from hunger, breath, and many mortal frailties, awakened skeletons are not unfeeling automatons. They remember pain, loss, and regret, even if those emotions now echo hollowly within a ribcage. Their presence often unsettles the living, and many are forced to conceal their nature or face fear, superstition, or violence.

To be an awakened skeleton is to exist between endings: no longer alive, yet not content to lie still. Whether seeking redemption, knowledge, vengeance, or simply purpose, they move forward bone by bone through a world that insists they should already be gone.

Awakaned Skeleton Traits

Awakened skeletons possess traits shaped by their undead nature and lingering will. Though animated by forces beyond life, they retain independence of thought and action, their bodies bound together by necromantic magic and purpose rather than flesh or breath.

Creature of Undeath

You are undead.

Bone Bound Body

Your body is composed of animated bone held together by necromantic force rather than flesh.

You do not need to eat or drink. You do not need to sleep; instead, you can finish a long rest by remaining motionless but aware for at least 4 hours.

Darkvision

Accustomed to darkness, you can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Scatter

As an action, you can deliberately allow your body to collapse into a loose pile of bones.

While scattered:

  • You are prone

  • Your speed is 0

  • You remain conscious and aware

  • You are indistinguishable from a mundane pile of bones unless a creature closely inspects you (DM’s discretion)

You can use an action on your turn to reassemble yourself, ending this effect. This trait provides no inherent defensive or restorative benefits.

Necrotic Frame

Your undead body is less susceptible to toxins and decay.

You have resistance to poison damage, and you have advantage on saving throws against the poisoned condition.

Unsettling Presence

Your skeletal appearance is deeply unsettling to most living creatures. You gain proficiency in the Intimidation skill.
