Homebrew Copperheaded snake born Species Details

In the humid transition zones where forest meets cavern, the Copperheaded Snakeborn thrive as the ultimate "mobile ambush predators". Far from the chaotic cults of their Yuan-ti cousins or the simple survivalism of the Lizardfolk, these hunters are defined by a chilling, meditative patience.

The Copperheaded Snakeborn
Physical Description
A Copperheaded Snakeborn is a masterwork of natural camouflage. Their bodies are heavy and muscular, covered in keeled scales that break up light and shadow. Their tan-to-pinkish base scales are interrupted by dark, "Hershey-kiss" or hourglass-shaped crossbands that make them nearly invisible among leaf litter or jagged stones.
Their most iconic feature is their unmarked, vibrant copper head—a spade-shaped crown that houses vertical pupils and specialized heat-sensing "loreal pits". These pits allow them to "see" the thermal blooming of a living creature against a cold cave wall with pinpoint accuracy.

Racial Traits
  • Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Dexterity score increases by 1.
  • Age. Maturity is reached by age 14, and though their lifespan is roughly 80 years, many live longer due to their slow, energy-efficient metabolisms.
  • Alignment. Typically Neutral, they value the "firm but fair" laws of nature and the patient discipline required for the hunt.
  • Size. Medium. Your height ranges from 5 to 6 feet, with a stout, powerful build.
  • Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
  • Subterranean Velocity. You are naturally adapted to the low, cramped spaces of the earth. When you are underground, in a cave, or within a tunnel system, your walking speed increases by 20 feet (total 50 feet).
  • Thermal Senses. You have Darkvision out to 60 feet. Additionally, you possess Blindsight out to 30 feet, which only functions against creatures that emit heat (non-undead, non-constructs).
  • Natural Camouflage. You have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks when hiding in rocky terrain, forest floors, or leaf litter.
  • Caudal Lure (Juvenile or Rejuvenated). As a bonus action, you can use your tail to mimic the movement of a small, helpless creature. One target within 10 feet must succeed on a Wisdom (Insight) check (DC 8 + Dex + Proficiency) or you have advantage on your next attack against it before the end of your next turn.
  • Hemotoxic Bite. Your fangs are natural weapons. If you hit with them, you deal 1d4 + Strength piercing damage.
    • The Sinking Venom: Once per long rest, after a successful bite, the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + Con + Proficiency). On a failure, they take 2d6 poison damage and are Poisoned for 1 minute. The damage scales by 1d6 at 6th, 11th, and 16th levels.
  • Patient Ambush. If you hit a creature on the first turn of combat and that creature is surprised or hasn't acted yet, you deal extra damage equal to your level.
