Homebrew Acadian troll Species Details

Acadian Troll

Acadian Trolls are an ancient, enigmatic race of trolls known for their vibrant, stone-like skin that ranges in hues of mossy green, earthy brown, and sunset orange. Unlike the brutish trolls of legend, Acadian Trolls are intelligent, agile, and deeply connected to the magical energies of the natural world. They hail from secluded valleys, hidden forests, and the misty foothills of mountains, places where magic still lingers and few humans dare to tread.

Acadian Trolls are muckh larger than humans, with thick, sinewy muscles and a natural toughness that makes them resilient in combat. Their most remarkable trait is their regenerative ability: even serious wounds mend rapidly, though magical attacks or silvered weapons can slow their recovery. Their senses are acute, allowing them to navigate dense forests and detect subtle shifts in magical energy.

Despite their size and strength, Acadian Trolls are known for their curiosity and inventive minds. They are natural explorers and problem-solvers, often acting as guardians of hidden realms, lost artifacts, or magical communities. They place great value on family, friendship, and loyalty, and they are fiercely protective of those they care for.

Culturally, Acadian Trolls blend a deep reverence for nature with playful creativity. Their homes are often built in caves, or rocky outcrops, decorated with living vines, glowing fungi, and carved stone motifs. Storytelling, music, and crafting are central to their societies, and young trolls are encouraged to learn both the ways of the wild and the secrets of arcane magic.

In social interactions, Acadian Trolls are charmingly blunt, with a mix of humor and wisdom that can disarm even wary strangers. While they prefer peaceful solutions when possible, they are formidable in battle, using a combination of brute strength, tactical cunning, and elemental magic to protect their kin and their homes.

Adventuring Acadian Trolls are rare but respected. Many leave their hidden homelands to explore human lands, seek knowledge, or aid in quests to maintain the balance between the natural and magical worlds. Their presence in a party is a boon, as they combine loyalty, resilience, and a touch of ancient magic that few other races can match.

Regenerative Tissue

Regenerative Tissue
Your body possesses a remarkable ability to recover from injuries over time. Small cuts, bruises, and other non-lethal wounds begin to close and heal naturally when you are not in immediate danger.

Effect: Outside of combat, you regain hit points equal to 1d4 + your Constitution modifier at the end of a short rest, representing your tissue slowly knitting back together. This healing does not function during combat, as the rush of adrenaline and focus on survival prevents your regenerative powers from taking full effect. Additionally, minor scars and superficial injuries fade more quickly than normal, granting you a subtle, almost unblemished appearance over time.

Prehensile Claws

Prehensile Hair/Claws
Your hair or claws are unusually flexible and strong, allowing you to manipulate objects or assist in climbing. You can use them almost like an extra limb, giving you unique versatility in both exploration and minor tasks.

Effect:

  • You gain a +2 bonus to climbing speed or when making Athletics (Climb) checks.

  • You can use your claws to grasp or hold objects up to 5 pounds as a free action, allowing you to carry light items, retrieve objects just out of reach, or manipulate simple tools.

  • Your prehensile appendages can also assist in creative problem-solving, such as tying ropes, pulling levers, or steadying yourself on narrow ledges.

Enhanced Senses

Enhanced Senses
Your perception is far sharper than most, allowing you to detect threats, track creatures, or notice hidden details that others might miss. One or more of your senses—sight, hearing, or smell—is especially acute, giving you advantages in specific situations.

Effect:

  • You gain advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on your enhanced sense (choose one: smell, hearing, or sight).

  • If you choose sight, your darkvision extends up to 120 feet, or you gain low-light or true night vision, depending on DM preference.

  • If you choose hearing or smell, you can detect creatures or environmental cues within 30 feet, even when they are lightly obscured, hidden, or moving silently.

  • These senses do not grant automatic identification of creatures or objects—you still must succeed on skill checks to interpret what you perceive.

Berserker’s Resilience

Berserker’s Resilience
When your body is pushed to its limits, a surge of primal energy floods through you, allowing you to fight on despite injuries. This resilience manifests as bursts of strength or resistance, helping you endure when the odds are against you.

Effect:

  • When your current hit points are reduced to half or less of your maximum, you gain temporary benefits until the start of your next turn:

    • Advantage on Strength checks and saving throws, or

    • Resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage (choose one when the trait triggers).

  • You can use this feature once per short or long rest (DM can adjust frequency for balance).

  • The effect ends early if your hit points are restored above half your maximum.
