Homebrew Dark Moon Elf Species Details

“They walk in the shadow of their own ambition, yet the stars within them still shine.”

— Elyndra Veyra, Scholar of Lunar Lineage

Nestled in the crescent valleys of the Silverveil Mountains, the city of Everbright is a testament to Dark Moon Elf ambition. Pale stone buildings glint faintly in the moonlight, and intricate spires reach skyward, mirroring the city’s obsession with perfection and symmetry. Despite its beauty, Everbright has a quiet, restrained air, with rituals and expectations woven into daily life. Few outsiders are allowed entry, and those who do often feel the weight of tradition pressing down even in the moonlit streets.

Dark Moon Elves are a fractured branch of the moon elf people. Unlike typical moon elves, who embrace openness, adaptability, and harmony, Dark Moon Elves sought to emulate sun elf perfection, denying their natural instincts. This self-imposed imitation has left them with shadowed powers, quiet grace, and an air of melancholy, yet a spark of starlight remains in their gaze, reflecting the moon magic that flows through their veins.

Slender and Graceful

Dark Moon Elves are refined and lithe, their bodies delicate yet strong, with a natural elegance in every movement. Their height falls relatively shorter than average humans ranging from well under 5ft to just barely above 6ft. Their weight usually falls between 110 and 140 pounds, reflecting a balanced, athletic build.

Their skin ranges from pale blue to muted gray-blue, often with a soft, moonlit sheen. Hair flows straight or slightly wavy in shades of deep purple, violet-black, or black with subtle silver streaks. Eyes shimmer like distant stars, in silver, pale violet, or icy blue, and often appear to glimmer faintly in low light.

They favor formal clothing that conveys refinement and status, often layered beneath flowing cloaks that add to their  presence. Fabrics are typically muted lunar tones with subtle silver accents, tailored to allow ease of movement while emphasizing elegance. Even in these practical garments, every fold and drape of cloth seems deliberate, enhancing the quiet grace they carry in every gesture.

Every movement exudes poise. Whether walking, gesturing, or running, Dark Moon Elves move with a fluid elegance that draws attention effortlessly. They seem almost otherworldly in their presence, a living reminder of the moonlight that still lingers in their veins.

A Timeless Perspective

With lifespans exceeding 700 years, Dark Moon Elves view the world through the lens of centuries, weighing every decision with care. They are patient, calculating, and slow to anger, often considering the consequences of their actions long before taking them. From a young age, they are trained in the arts of weaponry, mastering blades, bows, and staffs alongside their magical studies, ensuring that both mind and body remain sharp. This disciplined upbringing cultivates precision, patience, and a keen strategic mind.

Yet despite their rigorous training and structured culture, Dark Moon Elves remain remarkably adaptable, bending and flowing through challenges like moonlight spilling across rippling water.

Hidden Realms

You will rarely see a Dark Moon Elf’s city unless they want you to. Their settlements perch on cliffs, hide in dense forests, or nestle in secluded valleys, and they use magic and clever illusions to keep prying eyes away. They survive mostly on their own. Moonwort grows in their gardens, silvery carrots thrive in the moonlit soil, sheep provide wool and milk, and dire wolves roam the forests for meat and hides. Craftsmen and artisans produce tools, garments, and weapons, while mages maintain the wards, libraries, and magical networks that hum quietly across the city.

From a young age, every Dark Moon Elf learns both martial and magical arts. They practice with blades, bows, and staves while studying spells and strategy, preparing to defend their homes or move through the wider world unseen. Their society values skill, precision, and discretion, and each member contributes to the city’s survival with quiet efficiency.

Occasionally, you may catch one outside their hidden homes. Some travel as mages, scholars, diplomats, or expert warriors. Others wander as exiles, whether by choice or consequence. Whenever one is glimpsed, you notice more than just their pale blue-gray skin and starlit eyes. There is something almost otherworldly about them, a presence that feels like moonlight slipping through the shadows, leaving you with the sense that they are always a little beyond reach.

Exploration and Adventure

You almost never see a Dark Moon Elf beyond their hidden cities. Exiles are the ones you might spot, traveling alone and keeping mostly to themselves, while those who leave by choice are even rarer, moving as scholars, mages, warriors, artisans, or guides to distant places. In combat, they are careful and precise, striking only when it counts, always watching and waiting for the right moment. They see humans and other races with quiet disdain, thinking of them reckless, impatient, and often careless, rushing through life without thought or care. Even when they do interact, they stay at a distance, speaking and acting only when necessary, measuring every word and gesture. Each encounter is brief but memorable, giving a sense of their patience, quiet confidence, and careful observation. On rare occasions, some exiles join groups fighting oppression or injustice, acting in ways that make a few outsiders see them as closer to their origins, reflecting the ideals and purpose their society was once founded upon.

HAUGHTY BUT GRACIOUS

Although they can be haughty, elves are generally gracious, except to those who fall short of expectations, which is most non-elves. They used to still find good in anyone.

Dwarves. “Dwarves are stubborn, rigid, clods. They’re obsessed with outdated traditions, rarely impressive and never worth admiration.”

Halflings. “Halflings flit through the world too cheerfully and carelessly. Simple, easily distracted, and barely aware of anything beyond their own little comforts.”

Humans.“Always rushing, always loud. They act before thinking, and it shows. I do not trouble myself with them.”

Elf Names

Dark Moon Elves don’t stick with the same name forever. When they’re born, their family gives them a simple name, usually something about the moon or the night. That’s what they are referred to as during childhood, and some may still use it even after they’re adults, especially those who knew them when they were young.

Later, sometime after they turn 100 years old, they choose an adult name for themselves. This is a name they select based on who they’ve become, their experiences, or qualities they wish to carry forward. That’s the one people actually use from then on. The old name doesn’t disappear entirely, but it’s occasionally used by family or old friends, often in private or informal settings.

Age

Dark Moon Elves have long life spans like most elves. Young adults are typically around 120 years old, and can live up to 700 years old.

Size

Dark Moon Elves range from under 5 to 6 foot tall and have slender builds. Your size is Medium.

Due to your heritage, you now wander about the land cautious of every friend and foe around.

Proficiency bonus added to Stealth and Perception.

Ability Score Increase

Your Intelligence score increases by 2, and your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Fey Ancestry

You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Trance

Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Elvish. Elvish is fluid, with subtle intonations and intricate grammar. Elven literature is rich and varied, and their songs and poems are famous among other races. Many bards learn their language so they can add Elvish ballads to their repertoires.

Weapon Proficiency

You are proficient in using a long sword, short sword, long bow, short bow, quarter staff, and daggers.
