Homebrew Brahstein Species Details

The Brahstein (Cattlefolk)

What They Are

The Brahstein are a race of humanoid cattlefolk anthropomorphic bulls and cows whose existence is tied to ancient giant-kin magic, sacred land, and the strength of the herd. Descended from firbolg lineages shaped by primal forces and bound through generations of ritual union with minotaurs, the Brahstein embody endurance, patience, and communal strength.

To outsiders, they appear as living symbols of agriculture, protection, and fertility. To themselves, they are caretakers of the land and each other, believing that survival is not an individual act but a shared one.

They are not a warlike people, but neither are they weak. When threatened, a Brahstein stands their ground like an unmovable pillar.

Appearance

Brahstein are tall and powerfully built, typically standing 7–8 feet tall with thick frames and broad shoulders.

Heads: Bovine facial structure with square pupils, wide noses, and expressive ears

Horns: Curved, straight, or sweeping horns of varying size; often carved, adorned, or ritually marked

Skin & Hide: Thick, leathery hide covered in short fur, commonly white, black, brown, red, or spotted

Limbs: Muscular arms and legs ending in hands and cloven hooves

Tails: Long, flexible tails used for balance and expression

Their eyes are often calm and observant, and their movements deliberate—never rushed unless danger forces it.

Temperament & Behavior

Brahstein are known for being:

Patient and deliberate

Soft-spoken but firm

Slow to anger, slower to forgive betrayal

They value listening over speaking, and a Brahstein who speaks quickly or loudly is often assumed to be young, stressed, or grieving.

Conflict is avoided whenever possible, but when a line is crossed—especially against their herd, land, or traditions—their response is overwhelming and final.

They believe:

“A single beast may fall, but the herd endures.”

Society & Culture

Brahstein society is communal and interdependent.

Herds are extended family units rather than strict bloodlines

Elders are respected not for authority, but for experience and memory

Decisions are made slowly, often requiring consensus

Strength is measured by what you protect, not what you conquer

Children are raised collectively, and no Brahstein is ever considered truly “alone,” even when traveling.

Religion & Spiritual Beliefs

Brahstein religion centers around fertility, land, endurance, and protection.

Common beliefs include:

The land is a living entity that must be cared for

Horns are sacred, believed to channel divine or primal energy

Life is cyclical—birth, growth, death, and renewal are equally sacred

They often worship:

Nature gods (harvest, fertility, seasons)

Giant or primal spirits

Ancestor spirits, believed to walk the plains invisibly

Minotaur gods are sometimes honored as war-saints or protectors, especially in herds with strong minotaur lineage.

Rituals include:

Seasonal festivals tied to planting and harvest

Horn-blessing ceremonies

Silent vigils held for the dead

Relations With Other Races

Firbolgs: Viewed as distant cousins; treated with warmth and respect

Minotaurs: Sacred allies and kin; bonds range from political to deeply spiritual

Dwarves: Respected for craftsmanship, though considered overly rigid

Elves: Seen as wise but detached from the realities of survival

Humans: Regarded cautiously capable of great good or great harm

Brahstein rarely judge by race alone, but once trust is broken, it is very hard to regain.

Trade & Economy

Brahstein are master traders of sustenance and survival goods, not luxury.

They commonly trade:

Grain, dairy, cured meats

Leather, horn, bone tools

Herbal medicines and poultices

Beast-tending knowledge and farming expertise

They avoid coin-based economies when possible, preferring barter, long-term trade agreements, and mutual aid.

A Brahstein deal is considered unbreakable—breaking one is seen as a spiritual failing.

Medicine & Potions

Brahstein have a deep understanding of natural medicine and bodily endurance.

Healers focus on slow recovery, not instant cures

Potions are thick, earthy, and often unpleasant but effective

Many medicines are designed to be shared among multiple people

They specialize in:

Anti-exhaustion tonics

Pain-dulling brews

Bone and muscle recovery salves

Fertility and vitality elixirs

They are skeptical of overly refined alchemical potions, believing that true healing should work with the body, not override it.

Some Brahstein herds strictly forbid addictive or mind-altering substances, viewing dependency as a break in the herd’s strength.

Brahstein Traits

They do not rush the storm. They endure it together.
