Homebrew Cragback Species Details
Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (5–6 feet)
Speed: 30 feet
A heavily spiked and armoured Cragbacks are a distant relative of the Nomscolls, and equally stubborn, though not as boisterous. With a humble but resilient nature, Cragbacks have spread to being found across, though rarely, all the worlds of the Material Plane. Though they mostly stay out of the business of the societies of other species, they will not back down from a conflict, even one skewed against them.
Among other reptilian humanoids, they stand out for the large spikes and scutes that adorn them, from their necks and shoulders down to their short, broad tails— though, every Cragback has a unique arrangement of these spikes. In addition to that, their limbs and head are very heavily armoured with thick skin and scales. They come in a small range of dull colours, including greyish blues, muddy greens, and deep browns and reds.

Unless you specifically choose not to, all attackers that make an attempt to forcefully make physical contact— such as making an unarmed strike, shoving, or attempting a Grapple— must make a Dexterity saving throw against a DC of 11 + your Proficiency Bonus or take 1d4 Slashing damage. This saving throw must be made every one of their turns they maintain contact with you.
Seismic Strike
When you hit a target with an attack roll and deal damage to it, you can also choose to deal 1d6 Thunder damage to them. Additionally, the struck target and any other creature within 10 feet of the target must make a Dexterity throw against a DC of 8 + your Strength modifier or be pushed back 10 feet, and knocked prone.
This ability can be used a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and uses are restored on a Long Rest.
Shield Bearer
Your Hit Point maximum increases by 1, and it increases by 1 again whenever you gain a level.
Fused Build
Count as one size larger when determining carry capacity, and the amount you can push, drag, or lift. Have advantage on Saving Throws against being pushed or knocked prone.

Posted Jan 28, 2026This species is based off of some of the sister taxa of the ankylosaurians like nodosaurs and some primitive paranylosaurians. I didn’t want to make another “natural weaponry” dinosauroid species, which is why I avoided basing it off of the club-tailed guys.
