Homebrew Affectari Species Details

No record agrees on where the Affectari first appeared. Some scholars claim they were shaped by ancient arcane experiments. Others believe they emerged naturally in regions where magic saturates the land. The Affectari themselves rarely concern themselves with origin debates. To them, existence is defined by interaction, with magic, with matter, and with the unseen structures that bind reality together.

An Affectari experiences the world differently than most creatures. Magic does not simply affect them. It communicates with them. Objects do not merely exist around them. They present information, patterns, and impressions that the Affectari mind translates into meaning. Tools, structures, and crafted items feel alive to them, not with thoughts or emotions, but with presence and purpose.

To outsiders, Affectari can appear unsettling. Their gaze lingers on objects others ignore. They may speak softly to tools while working, eyes tracking symbols or shifting patterns no one else can see. To those who know them well, this behavior is simply focus and conversation with a world most people never perceive.

Physically, Affectari appear broadly humanoid but show signs of biological construction. Portions of their body are reinforced with dense, cartilage-like structures that replace or strengthen muscle and bone. These structures resemble living constructs rather than machinery, smooth and layered rather than jointed or metallic. Their skin often carries faint ring-like growth patterns that shift subtly under changing light.

The most distinctive feature of an Affectari is their eyes. Their eye color shifts naturally with emotional state, glowing softly or darkening depending on mood. To an experienced observer, these changes act as a constant emotional tell. To strangers, it can feel as though the Affectari is reacting to something unseen.

Affectari culture often revolves around craft, repair, invention, and preservation of knowledge through objects. They form deep emotional bonds with tools and creations. Many fear losing their ability to perceive the “voice” of crafted things, as it is central to their identity.

Affectari Traits

The traits of the Affectari arise from their architected biology, their instinctive connection to tools and mechanisms, and the way their emotions manifest visibly through shifting eye color. Either is correct.

Ability Score Increase

Increase one ability score by 2 and a different ability score by 1, or increase three different ability scores by 1 each.

Architected Physiology

Affectari are fully biological, but their bodies are internally structured with dense cartilage lattices, reinforced connective tissue, and specialized sensory organs.

Healing magic affects you normally. You are consciously aware of how magical effects interact with your body, but this awareness does not alter the spell’s function unless you choose to engage with another Affectari trait.

The loss of a limb or major bodily function is permanent and life altering for an Affectari.

Tool Fluency

You gain proficiency with one set of artisan’s tools of your choice.

You cannot be disarmed of this tool while it is on your person. You may stow or retrieve it as part of the same action used to interact with it.

Object Interpretation

To an Affectari, tools and devices are perceived as living systems that respond through visual translation rather than sound or speech.

While touching a nonmagical tool or handheld object you are familiar with, you instinctively interpret its condition and function as if in conversation. You can determine whether the object is damaged, strained, stable, recently used, or likely to fail under continued use.

Larger structures, unfamiliar devices, or complex mechanisms may require time, focus, or an Intelligence check at the DM’s discretion.

If you are blinded, you cannot use this trait.

Chromatic Expression

Your eyes naturally change color in response to your emotional state. The meaning of these colors is defined by you and may vary between individuals or cultures.

You may attempt to suppress or mask these changes, but doing so requires effort. The DM may call for a Charisma (Deception) or Wisdom check when concealment is important.

Other Affectari always recognize eye color changes as meaningful, even if they do not interpret them the same way you do.

Resonant Reception

When you receive a spell that restores hit points or grants a beneficial magical effect, you may choose to resonate with the magic.

If you do, you consciously experience the interaction between your body and the caster’s magical intent. This does not change the spell’s mechanical effect but may create sensory or visual narrative effects agreed upon by you and the DM.

You are never required to use this trait.

Climbing Adaptation

You have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed, provided you are using tools, handholds, or environmental features to assist your movement.

This trait does not allow you to climb perfectly smooth or sheer surfaces without assistance.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
