Homebrew [AoZ] Farfolk Species Details
The Farfolk are a species both unnerving and captivating to the rest of the multiverse. Descended from beings that emerged from the Far Realm, in an overlapping space in the Material Plane known as the Far Shore, the Farfolk are endlessly curious about the Material Plane and equally share the disdain of the infectious, malignant and alien morality that the Far Realm is notorious for.
As newborns and children, a Farfolk's body very closely resembles humanoid mortal children; this base physical form is especially true for those Farfolk that are born of mixed parents and oftentimes will pass as a member of the non-Farfolk parent's species or lineage. However, as the child ages and grows into an adult, their very life experiences can induce a series of metamorphic transformations that can fundamentally change their appearance, known as the Molt. By the time the child is considered a mature adult, their physical form will have likely changed in ways both subtle and gross, reflecting both their Far-touched heritage and the very physical and mental tribulations that their life has wrought upon them. Changes in gender can be expected, as are changes in limbs and appendages, such as the addition or loss of eyes, ears, limbs, and digits. Geodesic patterns, spots, and stripes are common. Even growths of fur, scales, and other such markings can appear or disappear after a Molt.
Culturally, the Farfolk are encouraged to leave their home communities, to go out and experience everything that the world has to offer them. Molts are considered both a rite of passage and a physical expression of the experiences each Farfolk has endured, and those who bear unique Molts are prized as sources of great wisdom and insight within their communities. Adventuring is considered the pinnacle of opportunity in this time of discovery for Farfolk, and they will, if feasible as a choice, seek to venture out and explore the world at the first opportunity.
[AoZ] Farfolk Traits
A Farfolk character has certain characteristics that align with the other mortal races. The Molt
A Farfolk character, whenever they would gain an ability score increase (through feats, features, or permanent effects provided by magical items), go through a molting process which occurs during the first Long Rest that follows the score increase. The Molt transforms a part or the whole of a Farfolk's character’s physical features into something that better resembles the increased ability score. You are encouraged to change your character’s description when a Molt occurs, but if you are struck with indecision, your DM (with permission, of course) can decide what physical feature(s) of your character has changed.
As the Mind, So the Body
Farfolk have a unique aspect of their physiology, in that their body Molts to better reflect their experiences and mental state. A Farfolk character gains Advantage to end or avoid spell effects or conditions that alter their physical form, such as Polymorph or Flesh to Stone. As they were descended from a powerful Far Realm entity, they are capable of enduring the psychic traumas that arise from such an alien place and are Resistant to Psychic damage.
Eternal Curiosity
Farfolk gain Proficiency in your choice of Persuasion, Intimidation, or Insight. If a spell, class feature, or ability would provide Proficiency to the chosen skill, it provides Expertise instead.
Farsense
Once a Farfolk character reaches level 3, they gain the ability to intuitively sense the presence of any Friendly creatures out to a range of 60 feet. They can sense both the direction and source of this Friendliness.
Additionally, at level 5, the Farfolk character can use this feature as a Bonus Action to sense Hostility from all nearby creatures, out to a maximum range of 60 feet. This effect lasts for 1 hour, and a Farfolk character using this trait in this manner cannot determine the direction or source of the Hostility, merely its presence. If Farsense is used in this manner, once it expires, all aspects of the trait become unavailable to use until after a Long Rest.
