Homebrew Common Dragonborn Species Details
The ancestors of common dragonborn trace their lineage to dragon eggs long removed from chromatic and metallic bloodlines. Some traditions claim their kind emerged when draconic power diminished over generations, leaving behind a hardier, grounded strain. Others insist they were always meant to embody the physical strength of dragonkind rather than its elemental fury. Whatever their origin, common dragonborn have established enduring communities across the Material Plane.
Common dragonborn resemble wingless, bipedal dragons—scaly, bright-eyed, and thick-boned with horns crowning their heads. Their scales tend toward natural, earthen tones, with brown being common among many communities, though individuals display a range of muted hues. Their heavy builds, reinforced scales, and powerful tails mark them as a lineage shaped for stability and strength rather than flight or flame.
Common dragonborn intentionally lack a Breath Weapon and Draconic Resistance. Their strength lies in durability, stability, and physical combat versatility rather than elemental expression.
This lineage pairs naturally with monks, tavern brawlers, pugilists, barbarians, and other martial archetypes that value resilience and close-quarters force.
Dragonborn Traits
Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 5–7 feet tall)
Speed: 30 feet
Darkvision
You have Darkvision with a range of 90 feet.
Grounded Physique
You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
In addition, when you fail a saving throw to avoid being knocked prone, you can use your Reaction to succeed instead. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Natural Weapons
You have the following natural weapons:
Concussive Fists and Headbutt.
Your fists and brow horn can be used to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with them, you deal 1d6 bludgeoning damage instead of the normal damage for an unarmed strike. You can use Constitution instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of these strikes.
Tail Strike.
Your heavy tail can be used to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with it, you deal 1d8 bludgeoning damage instead of the normal damage for an unarmed strike. You use Strength for the attack and damage rolls of this strike.
The damage dice granted by this trait don’t increase because of your species. If another feature (such as Martial Arts) would cause your unarmed strike to deal more damage, you use the higher damage die instead.
Reinforced Scales
While you aren’t wearing armor, your base Armor Class equals:
13 + your Constitution modifier.
You can use a shield and still gain this benefit.
You can’t use this trait while wearing armor, and it doesn’t stack with features that provide an alternate AC calculation (such as Unarmored Defense).
