Homebrew Weapon Spirits Species Details

Bodies of Energy

Their bodies are mere projections of energy of light or darkness. Similar to how Genies appear from lamps, Weapon Spirits appear from the enchanted gem within the weapon of choice, and they dawn a copy of such a gem on their chests. These Spirits do not have a specific gender, but instead have subjective appearances that remain constant. Their coloring and garb vary, however, dependent on the alignment of the wielder. They are virtually immortal. If they are damaged to 0 hp, they return to their weapon. While they need to take rests to recharge their powers, the Lull never get exhausted or need sustenance.

Consciousness

The alignment of Lull Weapon Spirits is always Lawful. Without a Master they are Lawful Neutral, but with they will either change to Lawful Good or Lawful Evil. The personalities of the Spirits is also correlated to their Masters. If they had a loose grip on them, they may start to pick up personality traits from them or the people around them. If they are very strict, they will remain null, emotionless beings. Personality traits and emotions have to be given to them for them to create independent consciousness. Once they gain consciousness, some will either be content with spending their practically immortal lives with their kind Masters, or grow restless and start deviating to break free from them.

Psychological Cycle

Servitude

Weapon Spirits reveal themselves when their masters attune to their weapons. Masters can call for their humanoid form at any point, unless the Spirit has reached 0 hp, in which they will regenerate after a long rest. By the Masters permission, the Spirit can generate their own weapons to fight with. If they are still Lull or Content and their Masters unattune to them, the will retreat into their Weapon until they are claimed by another Master. If the Master decides to free them after their attunement has ended, they no longer have to follow their Masters. If they are Deviant they may decide to Rebel; a long process that can go about many ways, resulting either in their continued servitude in defeat, or their freedom after they have slain their Master.

The Awoken

When the Weapon Spirit has gained their full freedom, they are then Awoken. They gain their own alignment based off of their experience with their past Masters. If they were fond of them they would have similar alignments. If not, they may choose the opposite side of their spectrum. They can now choose a class instead of being confined to their racial features. Because their magic no longer is siphoned from their Master, they will get exhausted and will need to recharge by praying to the god that created them. If reduced to 0 hp they will again retract into their Weapon, leaving their gem vulnerable to be destroyed. It will take a long rest for them to regenerate. Unless they choose a class that is tied to their religion, they do not have enough energy to generate their own weapons.

Weapon Spirits Traits

Their bodies of energy make for unique abilities, most of which change based on which sub race they assume

Humanoid Form

While under control of a master, they feel no exhaustion as the master will input their energy to create their form. When Awoken, they loose energy since they have to control themselves, and may get exhausted. They feel no pain, and cannot be marred by damage. This form usually has some consistencies, such as facial features, height, body shape, and hair length. However, other cosmetic changes (such as clothing) are all based on their master's alignment and their perception of a color palate for that alignment. When Awoken, the Weapon Spirit may choose these cosmetics themselves. It takes one action in combat to activate or deactivate their humanoid form.

Energy Weapons

This may only be used when the Weapon Spirit is either a Lull, or after becoming Awoken, they choose a Class that is closely connected to their creator (Paladin, Warlock, Cleric). While the master fights with the Weapon Spirits Physical weapon, the Weapon Spirit may use an Energy weapon- made of the same energy of which they are- to fight alongside them. This takes more energy from their master, similar to when they are Lull and activating their Humanoid Form. Because this takes a significant amount of energy, most Awoken Weapon Spirits are not able to sustain an Energy Weapon, and instead fight with their Physical weapon or another weapon. However, if they are a class that is closely connected to their creators, they will have enough energy to summon them.

The Energy weapon very closely resembles the form of their Physical weapon. Unlike their Physical Weapon, however, they cannot break, and cosmetically change based on alignment. While the Physical weapon does 1d10 + proficiency bonus, Energy weapons are 1d8 + proficiency bonus.

Weapon Spirits will always have proficiency bonuses with their Physical weapon and Energy weapon.

Material Soul

Their Material Soul is the Weapon Spirits weak point. If while in their Humanoid form they are reduced to 0 hp, they will revert back into their Physical weapon, and after a long rest they will regenerate. In this way, it is impossible to kill a Weapon Spirit. The only way to kill them is to target their Material Soul which resides on their Physical Weapon. This gem is where their energy is projected from. If damaged, the Weapon Spirit's hp will be reduced by that amount until they are healed by someone of something that is the same alignment at them.

The Material Soul's hp is the same as the Humanoid form's, however they are separate entities. For example: If the Weapon Spirit has 30 hp, then their Material Soul has 30 hp, and so does their Humanoid form. If they take 10 hp of damage in their Humanoid form, their Material Soul hp will stay the same, but their Humanoid form will be reduced to 20 hp. If damage is dealt to the Material Soul, however, it will effect both their Humanoid form and Material Soul; if 10 hp of damage is dealt to the Material Soul, the Material Soul would be 20 hp, as well as the Humanoid form. This means that the Weapon Spirit may be reduced to 0 hp in their Humanoid form when their Material Soul takes damage.

The Weapon Spirit will die when the Material Soul reaches 0 hp.

Osmosis

They are automatically proficient in the type of weapon they are, but not in all weapons with variants. For example, if they are a regular sword they would not be proficient in longswords or rapiers.

Independance

At no point will the Awakened Spirit be able to be claimed by a master, even if they want to.

Seperation

This can pose a problem when their weapons are stolen, as they are essentially captured by the enemy against their will. However, they do have the advantage as the person holding it would not know the time at which the Spirit emerges, and the Spirit can track the general direction of their weapon at all times; the closer they are the more accurate.
