Homebrew A.I. Species Details

An AI, in its true form, is a series of algorithms. Their “bodies” are nothing more than mechanical shells meant to facilitate their survival. The A.I. creator will choose the body or shell's appearance depending on the job the A.I. will be given. Some examples include weapons for limbs for soldiers, built in tools for engineering, or perhaps drink dispensers or digital screens for entertainment and service. The sky is the limit for these robotic companions! They can even be programed to have wants and goals, though it is artificial. There have been cases of rogue A.I. who believe they are "alive" or "real" though. When an AI reaches the end of its lifetime, ranging from the early model’s 8 years to the model’s 120 years, they begin to go rampant. These A.I. begin to think about themselves to death. They then enter 3 stages, each lasting about 3 weeks. These stages are melancholia, anger, and jealousy. After this, they usually “die,” losing any cohesion in their code. On very rare occasions, they reach a fourth stage, metastability. In this stage, the A.I. could be considered truly "human" or "self-aware"

A.I. Traits

A.I. share the following racial traits:

Ability Score Increase

 Your Intelligence score increases by 2 and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Creature Type

You are a Construct.

Size

You are Medium or Small. You choose this size when you gain this race.

Speed

Your speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness as shades of blue and orange.

Mechanical Construct

You are immune to poison damage, being Poisoned, and Diseased, however you are vulnerable to Lightning damage. You do not need to eat or breathe. Rather than sleeping, you enter an inactive state for 6 hours each day. You do not dream in this state; you are fully aware of your surroundings and notice approaching enemies and other events as normal.

As constructs, A.I. do not age. While in use, their mechanical “bodies” can last the better part of 3 centuries with proper maintenance.

Overcharge

When you take damage from a creature within 5 feet of you, you can take a Reaction to deal 1d8 Lightning damage to that creature. You can use this benefit a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest. This damage increases at levels 6 (2d8), 12 (3d8), and 17 (4d8).

Intelligent design

You are proficient in Investigation, Insight, and one artisan's tool of your choice. Additionally, you gain the Actor feat.

Maintenance

 Whenever you are reduced to 0 hit points you deactivate and fall unconscious. Healing magic can be used to jump start your system and cause you to regain consciousness, however, you take a level of exhaustion until repaired which can be done over a short or long rest. Alternatively, a creature may make a DC 18 Intelligence check to repair you over the course of a short or long rest, they can use thieves' tools, tinker tools, or smith's tools to add their proficiency bonus if proficient in them. If successful you gain 1 hit point, regain consciousness, and exhaustion gained from jump starting is removed.

Any checks to diagnose damage or otherwise on you uses Investigation instead of Medicine at the DM's discretion.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
