Homebrew Beofor Species Details

Beofor (Beaverfolk)

Architects of the Wild To the Beofor, the world is a series of resources waiting to be organized. They are not merely inhabitants of the riverlands; they are its stewards and shapers. While they resemble the common beaver in almost every physical respect—from their dense, oily chestnut fur to their broad, scaly tails—the Beofor walk bipedally and possess a level of architectural genius that rivals the greatest dwarven stonemasons. They do not see a forest as a collection of trees, but as the raw materials for a grander design.

The Lodge and the Dam Beofor society revolves around the "Lodge-Coterie," a communal family unit that maintains a specific stretch of waterway. Their homes are marvels of wooden engineering: sprawling, multi-layered citadels built of timber, stones, and river-clay. These structures often feature underwater entrances, climate-controlled chambers for storing winter bark, and high towers that serve as lookouts. A Beofor dam is never truly "finished"; it is a living project, constantly reinforced and expanded as the community grows.

Protectors of the Flow Though patient and methodical, the Beofor are fiercely protective. They view their community as a single organism; to harm one member or threaten the integrity of their dam is to invite the collective wrath of the lodge. When a threat is detected, the air is filled with the thunderous crack of tails slapping the water—a warning system that can travel for miles downstream. They are not warmongers, but they are incredibly difficult to uproot once they have claimed a riverbank.

The Call of the Current A Beofor rarely leaves their home without a significant reason. Those who become adventurers often do so as "Pioneers," tasked with finding new territories for their kin, seeking rare hardwoods, or neutralizing threats that originate far upstream. They carry their industrious spirit with them, often surprising their companions with their ability to turn a messy campsite into a defensible fortification in a single night.

Beofor Traits

As a Beofor, your heritage is defined by the steady flow of the river and the unyielding strength of timber. Your physiology—from your waterproof fur to your powerful, flat tail—is perfectly adapted for a life spent mastering both land and water. Your upbringing in a communal lodge has gifted you with a keen eye for construction and a protective spirit that ensures no member of your party stands alone against the current.

Age

Beofor reach maturity at the age of 10.  They tend to live well into 50s.

Hold Breath

Beofor can hold their breath for 15 minutes.

Ability Score Increase

Your dense, rugged physiology is built to endure the crushing pressures of deep water and the grueling labor of hauling timber, granting you exceptional resilience and steady physical power. Your constitution score increases by 2 and strength increases by 1.

Beaver Teeth

A beofor can chew through wood. Also, they must periodically chew on wood in order to keep their teeth from growing to an inconvenient length.

Insulated Coat

Your double-layered coat is naturally oily and water-repellent, trapping body heat even when fully submerged. You have resistance to cold damage. Additionally, you are biologically adapted to aquatic life and ignore any negative effects or exhaustion caused by swimming in freezing temperatures.

Tail Guard

You have mastered the use of your broad, leathery tail as a mobile barricade. You gain the following benefits: Tail Shield: When you or a creature you can see within 5 feet of you is hit by an attack, you can use your reaction to swing your tail into the path of the strike to grant a +5 bonus to AC against that attack. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. Brace for Impact: If the attack still hits despite the bonus, you or your ally have resistance against that instance of damage as you absorb the blow with your tail.

Beofortress

You have an innate ability to turn the surrounding environment into a reinforced sanctuary for your allies: Scrap Barricade (Level 1): As an action, you can instantly deploy a pile of timber and mud in a 5-foot space adjacent to you. This provides Half-Cover (+2 AC/Dex saves) to any creature behind it. The barricade is fragile; it lasts for 1 minute or until it takes damage. The Beaver Bastion (Level 5): Your mastery of construction reaches its peak. You can cast Leomund’s Tiny Hut once per long rest without using a spell slot. When cast this way, the "dome" is an opaque, physical fortress of thick logs and river stones.
