Homebrew Weapon Shifter Species Details

Once upon a time, there was a village that thrived on weapons trading, blacksmithing, and the creation of war machines. (Too lazy to write more for now, remember to finish this later)

All weapon shifters have three forms:

  • Humanoid (may be of any race, visually, but will always remain the same)
  • Weapon (may be any kind of melee weapon, martial or simple; all damage done is considered magical)
  • Smaller (similar to their humanoid form--but much smaller. May be Tiny or Small in size, but only occurs when a Weapon Shifter has taken on a decent amount of damage.)

Weapon Shifter Traits

A Weapon Shifter, while an uncommon species, is a humanoid that has the innate ability to shapeshift--but only into a weapon determined by the preferences of their wielders.

Weapon Shifting

Weapon Shifters have the ability to become a weapon, acting as a form of defense and offense for those who wield them.

  • You are able to become any weapon, and you are considered a magical weapon for the purpose of calculating damage.
  • You are unable to move or take the Attack, Use Item, Disengage, Dash, or Hide actions while in this form.
  • You are able to cast spells if you have any form of spellcasting ability. Spells that require touch, however, can only target the person holding you.
  • You rely entirely on your wielder's speed and actions when in weapon form.
    • OPTIONAL RULE: Your DM may rule that you can use your actions/bonus actions on the same turn as your wielder, and share their initiative. Be aware that this may effect game balance depending on how this is implemented.

Healing VS Mending

A Weapon Shifter classifies as both a humanoid and an object--but healing a sword isn't quite practical.

  • In weapon form, a Weapon Shifter is immune to all spells that would normally heal it. It CAN be healed in humanoid form, however.
  • In weapon form, a Weapon Shifter CAN be mended back to full health/full potential, depending on if you took the optional species feature of diminished form or not. It cannot be mended in its humanoid form.
    • Mending a Weapon Shifter with the optional Diminished Form feature will only restore it to one size bigger than it currently is.

Ability Score Increase

Weapon Shifters may choose two different ability scores to increase by one, or increase one ability score by 2.

Diminished Form (OPTIONAL)

When gravely injured, the Weapon Shifter will often become temporarily diminished and shrink down to a much smaller size as a result.

  • When the Weapon Shifter reaches half health, its form will be diminished to a smaller weapon and be unable to shift into anything bigger than a short sword. Its humanoid form will shrink down to a Small Size and gain a +1 to AC, but will have its speed reduced to 20 feet.
  • When the Weapon Shifter reaches one fourth of its health, its form will be diminished to an even smaller weapon and be unable to shift into anything bigger than a dagger or small pistol. Its humanoid form will shrink down to a Tiny size and gain a +5 to AC and resistance to force damage, but will have its speed reduced to 10 feet and become vulnerable to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.

Being mended/healed, using Hit Die during a Short Rest to heal, or receiving a Long Rest can restore the Weapon Shifter to its full potential.

Additional Languages

You know one additional language that your wielder knows--granted that you've travelled with them for a long time.

Uncanny Parry

As a reaction to a melee attack managing to hit your wielder, you are able to force your wielder into a parry, allowing you to take on the damage that your wielder would have taken on. Any other effects from the attack (such as a condition or magical spell being applied) will still effect the wielder.
