Homebrew Bugbear (Goblin+Demonkin) Species Details

Origins

Bugbears began when a goblin mated with a bear-demon, producing an egg instead of the usual goblin birthing process. From this egg hatched a litter of bugbears — an unprecedented event that repeated over generations until they became a distinct race. Over time, their growing numbers and unique traits set them apart from goblins entirely, much as orks once diverged from elves.

Lifespan

Bugbears hatch small (about a foot tall) and grow slowly. They reach the physical and mental equivalent of a human teenager around 40 years old and full maturity by 50. They can live 200–250 years, their long lives balanced by their slow development.

Child Rearing

Bugbears can reproduce with almost any humanoid species, but their offspring are always 100% bugbear. If the male is bugbear, the non-bugbear female gestates for about three months before birthing a single leathery egg. Female bugbears lay the egg themselves after the same period. Each egg holds a litter of three to eight.

The eggs incubate for another three months, guarded closely by parents, litter-family, or the community. Hatchlings emerge fully furred and mobile, about a foot tall, and are raised communally within their litter. Litters are the core of bugbear society: siblings grow, train, and stay together for life. Litters hatched around the same time often form “generational groups,” remaining tightly bonded through adulthood.

Family and Society

Society is shaped by environment. Some bugbears are raised as cheap laborers with numbers instead of names, while others grow up cherished as workers or guardians. Some integrate into families, adopting surnames; others become druidic loners. Though often treated as “lesser peoples,” bugbears maintain their good humor and find joy in simple things. Their litter bonds frequently outweigh broader social structures, and once grown, they’re not fond of change.

Non-bugbears raised alongside a litter can become part of it, but once a litter matures, they are reluctant to accept newcomers. Bugbears adapt easily in youth, but their social bonds and habits solidify as they age, making mature litters close-knit and resistant to change.

Religion and Faith

Bugbears see religion much like they see most mortal complications — as unnecessary clutter in an otherwise simple life. They acknowledge their demonic ancestry but don’t see themselves as demons or divine in any sense. To a bugbear, faith is something for people who need meaning beyond what already exists. Life itself — food, sleep, joy, and sex — is the only worship they require.

Some may nod politely to local gods or household spirits, but such gestures are made out of respect, not devotion. Bugbears believe that to live well and share laughter with one’s litter is holier than kneeling before any unseen power.

Naming Conventions

Naming varies widely: Labor-born may have numbers or none at all. Family-raised often adopt their family’s surname. Druids and loners choose their own names. There’s no unified naming tradition, reflecting their adaptability and diverse upbringings.
