Homebrew Tilia (Humblewood Homebrew) Species Details

Rhetoric and Revelry

Tilia culture celebrates an array of festivities believed to be necessary to keep the world turning. These revels generally center on important natural events, such as the solstices or the changing of seasons, and are overseen by the Amaranthine Gebbo, the tilias’ patron. The most superstitious tilias believe that refusing to participate in merrymaking angers Gebbo, who will bring misfortune to any spoilsports. Tilias raised in this culture of revelry are taught to see life as a performance, an art form only perfected through a lifetime of different roles. For such tilias, true wisdom can only be gained through a plethora of experiences. Therefore, many tilia embark on journeys to learn more about the world, logging their travels both for entertainment and enlightenment.

Curiosity and Creativity

Tilias enjoy seeking out the new and unfamiliar, devoted to broadening their perspectives and deepening their understanding of the world. By absorbing the different ways people draw meaning from the world, tilias can create a more vibrant picture of the world for one another. As a result, tilia culture is a vibrant patchwork of experiences, focused on learning, sharing, and self-expression.

Playing Politics

Though tilias tend towards friendliness and cooperation, their interactions drip with intrigue. Those in positions of power must play a careful balancing act, subtly strengthening allies and weakening rivals without appearing rude or dull. For tilias, politics is a game that can be won or lost; some play fair, but others are more than willing to cheat.

Experimental Temperaments

Tilias are renowned for their tradition of alchemy. Combining the knowledge of several different schools with the local flora of the Tanglewilds, they have made great strides in potion craft, especially in the development of healing salves. The alchemy they perfected by working with the jungle's flora have been expanded on by tilias in other lands and biomes. Alchemists are highly respected within tilia culture, and the more experimental their brews, the higher their esteem. Discovering an exciting new reagent or developing an innovative recipe is a perfect reason to celebrate.

Scaled Tales

As the only common scaled folk on a continent filled with furred and feathered folk, tilias have many idiosyncrasies that can confuse others. Other folk sometimes struggle to understand their motivations, as tilias often seem to act against their own best interests. For example, though tilias have a strong natural dislike for the cold, this does not stop them from exploring frosty locations such as the Crystal Expanse. Due to this, tilias have a reputation as peculiar and eccentric folk. They are often underestimated by others who don’t realize the depths of their plans and the hidden motives behind their strange behavior.

Tilia Names

Tilias favor poetic names that twist the tongue. First and last names often contain similar sounds. However, some tilia children are given names that aren’t alliterative but instead produce a unique or unexpected sound when said together.

Tilia (Humblewood Homebrew) Traits

The tilia species is inspired by geckos and other reptiles. They are a good fit for characters resembling small lizards of all kinds. Tilias often have bright-colored or patterned scales that blend in with the leaves and trees of the forest. They tend to prefer balmy climates with lots of lush greenery. Many tilias are found throughout the jungles of the Tanglewilds and the windswept Gasparian Isles far to the east of Wesden.

Creature Type

You are a humanoid.

Age

Tilia are considered adults by the time they are 15 and have an average life span between 50 and 60 years.

Darkvision

Your eyes need very little light to see. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Forest Cunning

You have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide in forests and jungles.

Sticky Grip

Your hands and feet have special pads that allow you to climb in extraordinary ways. You can climb upside down or on difficult surfaces without making ability checks.

Sticky Tongue

Your long, sticky tongue can be used to grab distant objects. As a bonus action, you can grab an object with your tongue weighing 20 pounds or less that you can see within 15 feet of you. Your tongue adheres to the object and pulls it toward you in a straight line. You can catch the object with a free hand; otherwise, it lands at your feet. If the object is being held or carried by a creature, the creature can make an opposed Strength (Athletics) check against you to keep hold on the object. Alternatively, you can use your action to project your tongue at a surface within 20 feet, pulling you directly toward it. This movement provokes opportunity attacks as normal.

Purifying Skin

Your scales secrete an oil that protects you from infection. You have advantage on saving throws made to resist disease.

Shedding Skin

When you take acid or poison damage, you can use your reaction to shed your skin, revealing fresh scales underneath and reducing the damage you take by half. You can also use this ability as a reaction to end any ongoing damage effect caused by sticky material, such as alchemist’s fire or a monster’s corrosive spit. You can’t use this trait again until you complete a long rest.

Scaly Subtlety

You have proficiency in either the Deception or Persuasion skill (your choice). Non-tilia humanoids have disadvantage on Insight checks made against you.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Birdfolk and Tilian.
