Homebrew Wespe Species Details

Wespe are a species of humanoid wasp-like beings defined as much by their volatile temperament as by their rigid devotion to the hive. Standing between four and six feet tall, their bodies are lean and chitinous, with segmented limbs, narrow waists, and thin, translucent wings that hum with a constant, low vibration. Their coloration varies between deep blacks, yellows, reds, and muted earth tones, often forming natural warning patterns across their bodies. Their eyes are large and multifaceted, reflecting light in a way that makes direct eye contact deeply unsettling to most other humanoids.

At a glance, Wespe appear alien, but their movements are disturbingly purposeful every twitch, every turn of the head feels calculated, instinctual, and predatory.

Hive-Bound Society

Wespe do not form societies in the traditional sense—they form colonies.

Each colony is ruled by a single Queen, a figure both revered and feared. The Queen is not merely a political leader but a biological anchor for her people. Through powerful pheromones, she influences the emotional state, coordination, and even decision-making of her hive. Every Wespe, regardless of role, feels her presence at all times a faint but constant pull in the back of their mind.

When the Queen emits a distress signal, it is not a request it is a command embedded in their very biology. Wespe who ignore such a call are seen as defective and are often exiled or killed without hesitation.

Within the colony, Wespe fall into loosely defined roles: soldiers, scouts, drones but individuality is secondary to function. Personal ambition rarely exists outside of how one may better serve the hive.

Territorial Instincts

Wespe are violently territorial creatures. They refuse to build their colonies within 40 feet of any area already inhabited by other humanoids, not out of respect, but out of instinctive rejection. Foreign presence is seen as contamination.

This territorial nature extends beyond their homes. When encountering outsiders, Wespe are quick to aggression, especially if those outsiders linger too long or come too close. Even among their own kind, tensions run high colonies are distinct, and unfamiliar pheromones are often met with hostility. A wandering Wespe entering another colony’s territory risks immediate attack unless they can somehow prove allegiance or purpose.

Communication Through Scent

While Wespe are capable of speech, their primary form of communication is through pheromones complex chemical signals that convey emotion, intent, identity, and hierarchy.

Every Wespe carries a unique scent signature tied to their colony, allowing others to instantly recognize friend from stranger. Emotional states such as fear, anger, or distress are involuntarily broadcast, making deception among Wespe nearly impossible.

This also means that interactions between different colonies are tense at best and explosive at worst, as unfamiliar pheromones can trigger immediate aggression.

Short Tempers, Sharpened Minds

Wespe are notoriously short-tempered. Their emotions burn hot and fast, especially anger. Minor slights can escalate into violence in seconds, and once provoked, a Wespe rarely backs down.

However, this volatility is paired with sharp instincts and heightened awareness. Wespe are rarely caught off guard, their senses constantly scanning their surroundings for threats. In combat, they are relentless, favoring swift, aggressive tactics and overwhelming force.

Natural Weapons

Every Wespe is born with a venomous stinger, a deadly natural weapon capable of delivering both physical and toxic damage. The venom varies slightly between individuals but is universally painful and debilitating.

Unlike true wasps, a Wespe does not die from using its stinger. Instead, it is a weapon honed through both instinct and experience, often used with terrifying precision in battle.

Flight and Mobility

Despite their relatively slow movement on the ground, Wespe are agile fliers. Their wings allow them to maneuver quickly through the air, making them excellent ambushers and skirmishers.

In combat, they favor hit-and-run tactics darting in, striking with their stinger, and repositioning before their enemy can react.

Exile and Isolation

To be cut off from the hive is the greatest punishment a Wespe can face.

Exiled Wespe lose access to their Queen’s pheromonal guidance, often leading to psychological instability. Some become feral, driven purely by instinct and aggression. Others attempt to adapt to life among other humanoids, though their nature makes integration difficult.

These rare individuals are often seen as dangerous outliers unpredictable, volatile, and untethered from the structure that once defined them.

Adventuring Wespe

Wespe who become adventurers are almost always outliers:

Exiles cast out from their colony

Scouts sent on long-term missions

Survivors of destroyed hives

Or rare individuals who resist their instincts

They often struggle with independence, emotion, and social interaction, but in battle, they are unmatched in ferocity and precision.

To travel with a Wespe is to walk beside something that is not entirely comfortable being an individual—but is learning how to be one.
