Homebrew Mothfolk Species Details
Usually found in dark, secluded places, or cozy warm colonies the mothfolk, sometimes called mothmen are nocturnal creatures with wings, 4 arms, and a keen sense of smell. Many mothfolk live in dark forest canopies or deep winding caves by them selfs but some mothfolk have developed villages or colonies.
They are both rangers and rogues, scouts and sorcerers. Living in dark solitude or cozy colonies of family and friends. They are versatile and cunning, skillful and crafty, true masters of the shadows and the light.
Mandibles and fur... At least I think it's fur
From faraway, mothfolk look very strange. At first they look like regular humans, but as you get closer you see the mandibles, antenna, wings, and extra pair of arms. Standing upright, mothfolk can be anywhere from 3 to 5 feet tall, give or take.
Fur (I think it's fur but let's not fact check that) covers their bodies. Their fuzz typically denotes membership to a colony. Their fur can be any color under the sun (yes, even black) and you can usually tell which colony a mothfolk is from based on their fur colors and patterns (but it's usually difficult because of the hundreds of colonys their are)
Canopies, caves, and colonies oh my
Nowhere are the mothfolk more comfortable than in their colonies. They love being with familier faces but are also curious with visitors as long as their nice and make good company. When walking through a mothfolk colony all your senses will be active, from the sweet smell of fresh baked treats to the beautiful murals of sunsets and stars, mothfolk have one of the most unique and wonderful cultures ever, consisting of majestic light shows and beautiful festivals with delicious treats and never seen before art.
Most Mothfolk live in their colonies for their whole lives but some decide to venture out for many reasons weather it be a longing for adventure, solitude, knowledge or just new friends.
Moth Mannerisms
The resemblance of mothfolk to regular moths isn’t limited to physical features. Mothfolk display many of the same mannerisms as ordinary moths. They may make clicking noises when feeling strong emotions or brush their antenna back when nervous or anxious.
Mothfolk born during the day are usually extroverts with lighter fur while mothfolk born during the night are usually introverts with darker fur. Mothfolk born during an eclipse are called eclipse born. Read the eclipse born background for more information.
Mothfolk are nocturnal. Because of this they have trouble integrating into other villages and towns and interacting with them, because of their different times. This has however helped them, because they have little connection with other settlements they don't have many sicknesses or crimes spreading from outside their colonies.
Though it might be off putting for some, mothfolk don't see the need for clothing wearing only jewelry and other small accessories, their fur covers their whole body acting as a replacement for clothing, which in their opinion is too bulky and itchy.
They are mesmerized by lights and usually wear jewelry which sparkles and shines. They do how ever find red lights calming and almost protective, apposing the bright distracting lights seen in other colors.
Many mothfolk punctuate their speech with clicks, sounds they use to convey emphasis and to shade meaning, much as a human might through facial expressions and gestures.
Mothfolk are curious creatures and unfamiliar things like large bustling towns or big crowds can both peak their interest and spook them. After a while they usually find the courage to explore new places and things.
Homelands
No one truly knows where mothfolk came from but their some of the most unique creatures both in appearance and culture. Mothfolk enjoy peace and solitude. They spend most of their lives in or around their colonies. Some mothfolk leave their colonies, most of these mothfolk find a secluded home in a cave or the canopies of a tree with just them or a small group of friends or family, but some mothfolk leave with a bigger group of people and start their own colonies.
Once a colony of mothfolk settle in an area, they choose group leaders. These are usually the oldest or most skilled mothfolk. There's no one mothfolk that rules the whole colony, there split up into districts. These districts can include but are not limited to, food, building, trade, festivities, and gathering. the districts are different in every colony, but all colonies usually have 1-3 leaders for each group with most mothfolk focusing on one district that they choose at the age of 20. At the age of 10 they start to decide their district and train in each one until the age of 15 where they start training in 1-3 districts that there the most skilled at. Finally at 20 they choose one main district to focus on and if they've been in that district for at least 15 years they can be voted to become a leader of that district. This is the usual colony system but some colonies are slightly different.
A typical colony can form in 3 types of places, a warm savannah with some hills, a cool winding cave with a large main area, or a large shady canopy with many layers. These are some of the usual places for colonies to form but it all depends on the mothfolk themselves.
